Day trip/potential overnight trip suggestions?

Hope this is the right place to ask and apologies for the vague title!

I have family visiting me and love doing day trips/overnight travel. Over the years, we have gradually exhausted all the easy trip options out of London. I now also live in Stevenage so there’s the additional travel into London before heading elsewhere.

This time I am planning a trip to York (which we’ve never been to yet!). Looking to do as a day trip but wonder if the following is possible.

Stevenage to York, explore York for the day
Train out to a nice town/village and overnight stay at a B&B
Explore town/village the next morning before heading back to York and Stevenage.

If so, what would the “village/town” be?

Also any other suggestions of where to go for a trip of this format? We’ve done Cambridge, Brighton, Cotswolds, Bath, Oxford, Canterbury, Stonehenge, Edinburgh.

Many thanks!

Personally I'd just stay in York. It's a lovely city with tonnes to see do and explore. Unless you really want a rural experience you won't find anywhere nicer to spend some time.

Thank you! I know a day trip is what people usually do but would an overnight stay be better (eg would we have to rush through things?)

I've had a couple of enjoyable weekends there. There is plenty to do - the NRM, York Minster, Jorvik viking centre - and wandering the Shambles after the day trippers have gone is doubly enjoyable. Some great restaurants and pubs too.

A day trip is possible but it will be quite rushed.

York is a great place to visit and certainly worth an overnight stay. I would try to stay at least 2 nights as there is so much to see. I like walking around the narrow streets of York in the morning before the day trippers arrive. A walk right around the city walls is also worth doing if you have never been before.

If you are looking for alternative locations easily accessible from Stevenage by rail, I would recommend Lincoln.

It’ll be our first time so I think overnight trip definitely. Thanks again

That's also a good call and an easy day trip. I enjoyed my visit to Lincoln a couple of years ago.

Never considered Lincoln, thank you!

Harrogate is lovely, as is the line, York-Harrogate-Leeds and then (Leeds to Stevenage) direct or with one change.

another vote for Harrogate here.

Ilkley is also one of loveliest places in Yorkshire. Not much to do there though
