I was travelling on the 1130 x Birmingham NS to Leeds 1S43, running late but by Sheffield it was back on time, got to Aldwarke Jct and then followed 2N17 Sheffield - Leeds stopper to Moorthorpe, which delayed us nearly 20 minutes. A quick look on RTT shows the stopper was let out in front of us running 4 min early at Aldwarke Jct & should have been following us.

This was a completely unnecessary delay, god knows how late it will be by the time it gets to Glasgow!... rant over

Err, 11.30 ex Birmingham New Street (15 late leaving). Still 10 late at Alnmouth, though expected to be on time at Glasgow Central. Does seem pretty perverse to let Leeds stopper out at Aldwarke which then sat for 5 mins at Swinton awaiting time. No doubt XC control will have words with NR,

The service should have been looped before Moorthorpe if this happened.

It looks, according to RTT, that XC passed the stopper, but where is the loop north of Swinton? The XC passed Moorthorpe before the stopper, so Hemsworth loop wasn’t used.

Thinking about it now, I bet it was done by ARS and yes it was 1130 x brum!

Rather interesting that 2N23 (16:15 Sheff to Leeds via Moorthorpe) was looped in the Brightside Sidings just before Meaodwhall to allow the XC to pass first.

Just a little tit bit - 2N17 you referenced earlier ran over Aldwarke early as it missed out Rotherham due to the signal failure and instead ran straight through the old Rotherham Masbrough statiom

Ah! That explains that, and the 5 minute stand at Swinton. Nowhere else for the stopper to go after Meadowhall until the loop south of Moorthorpe. So not perverse signalling at all!!

We have had signalling problems (interlocking) at Rotherham Central, allowing us to run in only one direction (due to it been a single line), Roth to Shef up the Holmes Chord. Most Dearne Valley stoppers have been looped at Brightside to get the XC past them rather than using Roth Central. S&T have been there all day trying to fathom the problem out.

In a situation like this. the old loop round the back of the Down platform at Masborough would have come in handy!

The tram train was the only thing working relatively well yesterday. The loop at Masbro' was freight only so would not have been much help at all yesterday.

Do XC always go via Wakefield Westgate ? Do they go via Barnsley?

On the 2 times I travelled on XC between Sheffield & Leeds, they went through Meadowhall, Swinton & Moorthorpe - before joining the ECML just North of South Elmshall

Not really possible to hold at Sheffield anymore due to platform sharing requirements, we need the space for other trains. There are no XC services via Barnsley unless diverted.

Would it have been possible to hold the stopper at Sheffield to let the XC go ahead? It'll catch up some time anyway since it skipped Rotherham.
Sheffield platforming is incredibly tight, especially on 3 and 4 where most Northern services terminate and depart, as there is only 1 track to access two platforms. If you miss your departure, you could be waiting a while.
