Firstly, apologies. I realise this subject comes up regularly but the search function returns an unmanageable number of entries.

I would like to pick your collective brains regarding the refusal of Cross Country trains to pay my delay repay claim in full.

The journey in question was a return journey (Chesterfield - Bristol Parkway, there and back in a day), booked under one booking reference, using multiple tickets. The return was delayed by 4.5 hours.

XC have agreed to refund the cost of the return portion, consisting of the cost of two singles and a return ticket partially used on the outward. They are refusing to pay the cost of two singles that made up the rest of the outward journey.

After a number of emails, I have received the following reply from XC:

'I can see that you were travelling with split tickets, therefore you are only entitled to claim compensation for the tickets specifically relating to your delayed journey. I can confirm you have been compensated correctly as per our Delay Repay scheme.'

From reading the forum over the last few years, I do not think XC are correct. Would you please confirm if I am correct in thinking that 100% of the return journey is to be refunded following a 4.5 hr delay?

Many Thanks.

Yes, the two tickets not compensated were advance singles.

Thank you.
Paul H.
The Advances aren't return tickets so they wouldn't be compensated in that scenario; they have acted correctly in compensating the portion of the return used on the outward, but not the Advance Singles.

Just to clarify this scenario : travelling from A to D via B and C with the following 3 splits :
A-B (TOC 1)
B-C (TOC 2)
C-D (TOC 3)

Am I correct in saying that if TOC 2 causes the delay and you end up missing the connection at Station C then you can claim compensation for the entire journey , A - D ie all 3 tickerts , from TOC 2 ?

Yes, Delay Repay for the delay in arriving at your final destination compared to the booked arrival time.
If you have an itinerary for the complete trip, that can be helpful, but you can also buy the tickets separately and the same applies as long as you have at least the minimum connection time between the trains at the connecting stations. The itinerary just helps with your Delay Repay claim.
