That's almost certainly a write off, it'll be heading to the scrap yard like 110 and 134.

Pretty much a certainty, given that the whole fleet is due for withdrawal in the near future anyway.

Please remember that, whilst thankfully from the posts above everyone seems to be OK, we don't yet have official confirmation of this anywhere I can find - until then, can we please try and keep the jokes to a minimum. Also, speculation as to the cause of the issue probably isn't helpful - a full investigation will undoubtedly be carried out by the RAIB in due course.

It always amazes me the damage that can be done form a slow moving train . I remember being at Chester the day the Virgin train failed to stop in time, very low speed , huge damage. I do wonder if having hydraulic buffers installed on platform and train as used to be, could lessen the impact.

So what do we know so far?

The 1835 (Merseyrail operated) Liverpool Central - Kirkby service due to arrive at Kirkby at around 1853 has stuffed into/through the buffer stops on Platform 1?

Train crew (and any passengers) thankfully o.k. but possibly shaken up.

Apparent damage to both the Class 507 multiple unit train, buffers, platform edge and maybe the over bridge.

Emergency services alerted just minutes later.

Services from Liverpool Central to/from Kirkby now terminating two stations short at Rice Lane.

Anything else?

Oh 100% (especially looking at the latest photo) - I just don't think it'll be going to Newport. Certainly not in a fit state to get dragged there, so might as well send it to a closer scrapyard if it's going by road

Looking at the damage there was quite a lot of luck involved as no one was injured. 507006 is definitely gone, there’s no fixing that and I absolutely agree it’s in no state to be hauled and Newport’s a long way by road from Merseyside, probably will be scrapped closer to Liverpool.

Very nasty indeed. There are TPWS grids on the approach to that terminal platform and they usually do approach it at a crawl. Will be very interesting to see the investigation report

I do wonder if having hydraulic buffers installed on platform and train as used to be, could lessen the impact.
Hydraulic stops are better than nothing, but as a rule only at very low speeds because once the hydraulic piston is fully compressed no more energy can be absorbed and any remainder then acts on the stop as though they were simply fixed. The new standard is for friction-drag buffer stops which are designed to slide along the rails at a controlled rate and thus slow the train less suddenly.

Hydraulic buffers on vehicles are of no real use as they compress even faster than the ones on the stop.

Whatever the cause the main thing is that nobody has been seriously injured. I am sure they will find out what happened in due course. Main thing is everyone involved will be going home tonight which is the main thing.

The driver is very lucky, that could have been properly nasty. Those units are tougher than they look.

Hope everyone involves recovers quickly.

They will have seen what was coming, hit the emergency brake button and left the cab before the collision. Probably! If they were still in the cab, they will have been very lucky indeed

BTP have confirmed no serious injuries
Tweet : We were called to #Kirkby station at 7.01pm this evening following reports that a train derailed while travelling into the station. Officers, paramedics and fire services attended – thankfully no one sustained serious injuries. Enquiries are ongoing.
Good news - there's going to be quite the cleanup operation needed though. Presumably the priority tonight is getting the bridge structurally safe so the road can be reopened.

Yes, was shocked to hear that there were no serious injures after I saw the first clip of what happened. Lucky escape for all. Hopefully the cleanup operation will run without trouble, though wondering if it could be impacted due to the bridge there?
