A passenger train carrying 214 people has derailed and overturned in a river after hitting a tree that had fallen onto the line, according to US media.

The Alameda County fire department said on Twitter that all of those on board had been rescued and were being assessed by paramedics. The department later said 14 people had been injured, four seriously, but that none of the injuries were life-threatening.

Ten people have been taken to hospital.

The incident took place at 7.45pm near the town of Sunol, 45m south-east of San Francisco.

ACE 10 Incident Update

On March 7th 2016 ACE train 10 struck a tree on the train tracks at mile post 34 between Fremont Ca and Pleasanton Ca. Of the 214 passengers onboard 9 were injured and 4 of the 9 were transported to local hospitals. As of 10 P.M the train is empty, buses are in route for the remaining passengers to take them to their final destinations. Service is cancelled on Tuesday March 8th. We are working with our partners to restore service as soon as possible pending a complete investigation and assurance that the tracks are safe. We will update when more information is available.

That could have been far more nasty, with the coaches falling in the river.

Indeed. For more context, another quote from the Guardian article:
Altamont Corridor Express train official Steve Walker said the first car was carrying six passengers and one crew member when it fell into Alameda Creek.

Walker told San Jose television station KNTV the second car also derailed but remained upright. Three more cars behind, including the locomotive, stayed on the tracks.
The front car being lightly loaded will have greatly helped reduce the severity of this.

That stretch in the narrow Niles Canyon is really wiggly with tight curves and steep sides. There's actually two tracks running through the canyon mostly on opposite sides of the creek - one follows the road mostly whilst the other sits down near the river.
