    Gent's
Any advice on cheapest prices for this journey would be greatly recieved.
1 adult, 1 child, no railcards, single trip, flexible on times (pref. AM) and route (via Crewe, Birminham, others?)

Best so far via Crewe aprox. 33 pounds using walkup off peak day singles
and via Birmingham aprox. 45 pounds using walkup off peak/anytime day singles.

    Thanks

If travelling via Crewe, you could save an extra couple of pounds by just splitting your tickets at Nantwich but, as you then wouldn't be able to use Crewe-Shrewsbury trains that don't stop at Nantwich, that extra saving might not be worth it.

At time of posting there are still advance singles from Derby to Birmingham New Street available for £7.40 on the 1037, 1137 or 1237. Book one of these plus a CDS Birmingham to Shrewsbury for £14.00 and you could do the journey for £21.40.

EDIT: there are even cheaper advance singles from DBY to BHM of £5.80 on the 1337 and 1436.

    Thanks Captain.

Is that price just for the adult or the child as well?

Sorry, the fares I found are for the adult adult only. The child fares in both cases are half the adult one so would still give you a total fare of £32.10 in the morning or £29.70 in the afternoon.

for the record I used http://www.crosscountrytrains.co.uk/ to check the advance quotas and www.brfares.com for the standard walk up fares.

    Thanks again Captain,
£32.10, about the same as I had using walk-up's via Crewe, with the ability to use any AM train.

Also a bit quicker via Crewe providing I can make the +7 off the 09:43 from Derby

Does anyone know if it's possible to make a +7 between platforms 4 and 6 at Crewe?

Yes, plenty of time provided that the incoming train is on time.

Position yourself at the front of the train on approach to Crewe.

If the OP is coming across from Derby, than the likeliness is that the unit will be a single 153, meaning no matter where the OP get's off it is likely to be a short walk :P
