What's the apparent routeing of the train in this jaunty 1959 British Transport Films piece? Seems to take in East Anglia first (Beccles Bank signal box, then Spooner Row) before eventually proceeding along, I think, the old Penrith -> Keswick line (?) with Lake District mountains in the background.

Going from another thread it's quite a selection among the routes identified there are bits of the Wherry Lines, Norwich-Ely, the GEML, Newcastle-Hexham via North Wylam and the Tyne Valley to name some.

After having a trawl around this forum, seems that the "Magical Mystery Tour" of a film was previously discussed some eight years ago. Here are the findings...

Some additional comments by me in italics.

Part One, Eastern Region
00.00 Start of journey. (Possibly Norwich?)
01.21 Somerleyton swing bridge
01.36 Oulton Broad
02.50 Beccles Bank begins
03.04 GER distant signal
03.19 Beccles Bank signal box (Did this signal box burn down in 1958, a year before the film was released?)
03.26 Passed by "Britannia" class on XP. The area looks to be the line near Thetford/Newmarket
03.47 Passed by B1 4-6-0 on another XP
04.01 Ipswich water troughs
04.09 Another Britannia on the troughs
05.05 Spooner Row station and signal box.

Part Two, North Eastern Region
05.41 Unidentified junction and marshalling yard. PW staff undertaking track replacement work. (Possibly Carlisle, London Road area)
06.30 PW staff packing sleepers (possibly from Eastern Region) (Train destination board on passing DMU is displaying 'Norwich')
06.50 Wylam (bowstring) bridge (North Wylam Branch). (Hagg Bank?)
07.07 (Passengers seen studying a map which looks to be of the Wells-next-the-Sea area of North Norfolk)

07.15 Sandy Lane. (Is that the Sandy Lane between Eccles Road and Attleborough back in Norfolk or another one?
07.30 Level crossing approaching Wetheral
07.50 Wetheral station on the Newcastle & Carlisle Railway
08.37 Single track tunnel on Cockermouth, Keswick & Penrith Railway
08.45 Single track bridge
08.54 Approaching Penruddock station on the Cockermouth, Keswick & Penrith Railway
09.36 (Shot across the water may be of Bassenthwaite Lake looking over towards Skiddaw and taken from what's now the A66 main road between Keswick and Cockermouth)
09.49 Double track tunnel
10.10 Signals north of Ipswich (East Suffolk Junction?) and we're suddenly back in East Anglia!

A wonderful little film.
Nobody was smoking either!
Also a bit of Sherlock Holmes calculating the speed the of the train, although Sherlock did it by telegraph poles - I wonder if this was really possible.
