Directional carnets

there is a discussion about carnets being available for tickets with different pricing per direction for normal return tickets. As a carnet allows unlimited travel between the two named stations, it would seem that one return journey "wrong way" would be against the spirit of the pricing but would it be breaking the terms of the ticket?

Maybe the first touch in of the day has to be at the named origin station, although that wouldn't cater for a journey starting at an intermediate point. The t&c's don't make it clear as far as I can tell, and the normal return ticket rule of outward only being valid if in possession of an unused return doesn't translate to what is effectively a single day season.

If a 'carnet' ticket allows unlimited travel between two points it is difficult to see how it can be used in the 'wrong' direction in the same way that a season ticket is valid between two points rather than stating at which of them the daily travel should commence. However, of those carnets currently available most, if not all, are for single or return journeys rather than unlimited travel so so will have a 'wrong' direction of travel although some are for single journeys but bidirectional and therefore won't have a wrong direction.

The SWR Carnet is for unlimited travel between two stations.

A Southampton to Waterloo carnet is £874 for 10 days of unlimited travel. A Waterloo to Southampton carnet is £473.10 for seemingly the same thing. Quite a saving to be made there!
