Officially, no. Unofficially, they might sometimes get a nod and a wink for a free ride, depending on who's doing the tickets.

The only discount non-priv Network Rail staff get is a 75% discount on a season ticket to their place of work, but even this comes with conditions.

The idea of giving all Network Rail staff priv facilities on leisure travel crops up every year but has always been rejected on grounds of cost.

SWT tried to give the NR staff free travel (on SWT) when the "Alliance" started up but it was blocked by NR as it woulld be unfair when nobody else in the Country gets it.

With an employer like that who needs enemies.

And we are regularly told that if caught and reported for travelling without a ticket it's a "severe chat with no tea or biscuits!!"

I'm fairly sure NR staff in the appropriate area do get free travel on SWT - I've seen an NR free travel on SWT pass that is in date as recently as 7 days ago.

Unfortunately one of the downsides of the fragmented railway where many of the people doing the work get naff all, whilst some organisations outside of the railway industry find themselves being given, albeit limited, discounts. I do feel sorry for Network Rail staff, particularly those non-safeguarded who used to work for Tocs and then found themselves transferred over and losing the travel passes.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think even the 75% rebate is taxable, meaning in reality it's worth somewhere in the mid-50s discount for a lower rate taxpayer.

There are working passes - given out quite freely I'd imagine. The opposition was cost based; it would lead to similar arrangements being asked for country over. To get around this, and entry to the ATOC scheme, SWT offered to give it free, but NR decided it would cause them more grief than solve.

Can't say I blame them to be honest.

There have been a few heavy duty briefings about this on the SWR over the last few months. One too many taking the mick I suspect is the root cause, rather than manglement getting their knickers in a twist.
