Seems there has been a large amount of disruption northbound this morning because of a train fault on the West Coast Main Line.

From what I gather the 07:40 ex Euston train had door issues after the train had left London. It then carried on delayed by half an hour until it got to Colwich when it stopped again blocking the Colwich to Stone line meaning trains had to be diverted via Stafford.

It was 1H09 07:20 Euston to Manchester Piccadilly (set 390153) which was the cause of the problems. As you say, door problems. Originally a door needed locking out of use, then after the driver fixed this problem a few minutes into the journey, the driver later reported that the doorsteps had been deployed [in the Colwich area].

Train terminated at Manchester Piccadilly at 10:42 (77 late).

Do the steps of the passenger doors retract when the doors close (presumably to avoid fouling stuff when tilting)?
