Do we need reserved seats?

The advance fare Tywyn-Newbury is about one-fourth the off-peak fare, but it would mean no reserved seats Tywyn-Wolverhampton on Arriva Trains Wales. We would be a group of three traveling at 9:37 on a Tuesday morning in July. Would this likely be a crowded train? Thank you.

It's actually a fare set by XC:

"valid via: Crosscountry Trains and other TOC connecting services"

Virgin WC do plenty of Advance fares that offer connections on overcrowded TPE services. Although, XC and ATW are both Arriva companies.

I noticed Newbury is mentioned. Is the date given a non-race date at Newbury?

Are you sure you not be given reservations for the Tywyn-Wolverhampton service? It's shown as reservable so you should be issued a reservation for it.

Unless that is that it's a train which is shown as reservable but without reservable seats - in which case you'd not be able to reserve seats whatever ticket you hold.

Didn't ATW stop issuing automatic seat reservations for Advance tickets?

That does ring a bell now you mention it. Is there any recesmm why a seat reservation couldn't be obtained after booking the Advance ticket? Not that I would anticipate a need on this service.

ATW will still reserves seats if requested at a station and the particular service allows reservations. Advance Purchase online though merely offers 'booked train'.

ATW take the same approach as LM with Advance tickets. You get given a "Coach X Seat XXX" reservation coupon.

At times the ATW trains (especially on the Marches line) can get really busy. The trains are reservable (and seat reservations are put out, unlike on LM) but as has been pointed out, you don't get reservations online for advance tickets (although you do for walk-up tickets).

One of the problems with this service is that they often run 2 coaches. The rest of the time it will be 3. If they put out reservations for all of the advances purchased, it would block out a significant percentage of the total seats on some trains. The answer, of course, is to provide us with a proper service that has enough carriages for the job, but that's not going to happen any time soon.

I've found the staff at Hereford willing to do seat reservations for advance tickets you buy from them, and for any walk-up ticket, but not for advances bought online.
