Don't forget, a minority of the American people voted for him. His current approval rating is 39% (against an average 56% in their second December) - I dare say it won't be improved by this.

Trump will end up standing for a second term, and he'll win it.

The Donald stated all through his election campaign that Mexico would pay for the wall. So why does he need £5bn in budget agreement from Congress?

Obviously we all know the answer, but why are the media outlets not remembering this when reporting on the 'shutdown'? Everyone seems to have conveniently forgotten...

No-one won an overall majority of the popular vote in the 2016 US Presidential election. Or should that be nobody...

Vote for Nobody
Nobody will keep election promises...

As seen in several memes over the years.

It seems that Donald Trump will hold a speech 2.00 GMT tomorrow morning about the wall and state of emergency.

As for the wall, it is purely strategic so if the Dems win in this war over govt shutdown, Trump fails on a major campaign promise on wall funding and doesn't get reelected. They have already pledged $12bn for foreign aid and zero for a wall, despite Dems promising it in '06 and '13. But it shows that this, plus their continuous impeachment diatribe, shows they are weak and cannot appeal to ordinary Americans. They are doubling down on a losing strategy and this why Trump will be re elected.

Nothing shows weakness and a failure to appeal to ordinary Americans quite like recapturing the House of Representatives on a huge swing , flipping several state legislatures, gaining trifectas in some states and gaining several Governorships , even in deep red states like Kansas and Oklahoma

Hardly a losing strategy , I'd say given the most recent elections, and the Alabama senate race

Nothing says feeling the need to cheat like running on a Republican ticket and then flipping to Democrat once elected. I'm just saying.

Congratulations to the longest shutdown with 22 days in US history. It will set new standards!

At this rate it is going to get very interesting, especially if it continues long enough for federal employees to get into financial difficulties.

It already has. There are numerous examples of federal employees having to ask banks/creditors for deferred payment dates. So far most have been accomodating but that won't last.

If you have Twitter search for #ShutdownStories.

It seems that flightincidents are not investigated. Also no statistics for everyone. Every day do not work the federal workers have to work harder in future after the shutdown has ended.

What also seems to have escaped notice is that thousands of federal contractors are also not being paid - unlike federal employees, they won't get back pay.

Pulling back by Donald Trump would see like a defeat. So someone has to give.
At the moment, the most likely resolution will be GOP senators forcing Mitch McConnell to allow a new vote on the funding measure that was passed unanimously back in December. That would override any presidential veto.

Politicians only have loyalty to one person: the one they see in the mirror. Once these Republican politicians believe Trump is a danger to their own careers then he is in real danger.

I'm waiting for these unpaid employees to strike and the massive problems that would cause esp.
if that included all border/customs and ATC staff as well, the country would really be on lockdown.
To be quite honest that is what I'm hoping will happen in some ways as it would hopefully really hit home what is going on and might sway even the most dedicated trump supporter to thinking that he might not be quite what he claims to be.

Just think of the economic problems that would cause, this would likely see the president suddenly becoming an ex-president very quickly.

Personally I think federal employees are being VERY patient and if the same think happened in Western Europe strikes would have happened by now.

Indeed, the Yellow Vest movement being just one example of that!

You've even got Canadian ATC buying pizzas for their colleagues south of the border, and Irish ATC offering the same.
All this over a disagreement that has absolutely nothing to do with ATC.

Worst part is, even if Trump gets his wall it is likely to cut no more than half of illegal immigration (50% of illegal immigrants are visa overstayers) and less than 25% of the drugs/weapons flow (some 80% of drugs come through official border crossings and more weapons leave the US heading south than come the other way).

Hey wants $5B to start building the wall (final cost estimates go as high as $25B), for $1B they could hire an additional 20,000 border patrol agents.

It's an ego thing for him. Few people likely care about the wall. Everytime he mentions it the hardcore supporters and automated Russian bots go crazy with support, but who cares? If he never mentioned it again, nor would anyone else after a while.

He would sooner destroy the country than give in, and if it gets worse (as it will) then he will continue to blame it on the Democrats. That's likely what he's wanted all along. Then when a crisis really does occur, he can invoke special powers to save the day.

I am sure that's how his brain works.

I was just sent this:

(Lego box with front showing Trump behind a wall he is building, warning: No doors or windows, suitable for 4+, but it doesn't say what the "4" refers to...)

Donald Trump invited some sportpeople for a hamburgerparty in the White House apparently. For the pictures see Google Images.

It was the Clemson University football team, winners of the National College Football Championship. It's traditional for winners of national competitions to be invited to the White House for a photo op with the President.

However, 45 couldn't even manage this without managing to put his his foot in it:

He just seems like he shouldn't have got beyond being a town mayor in a 1950s Western movie.
