Hello all. I'm going to be in the Dordogne this August and know nothing of the French rail system. Can anyone recommend a good place to swot-up on what I may see? Many thanks in advance.

Wikipedia may help? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SNCF

In France, services are split between long distance (TGV etc., whilst local services are provided by TER, who will operate local to medium distance services in a certain geographical area. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transport_express_régional

For example, I believe the TER service where you'll be is TER Aquitaine. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TER_Aquitaine

TER recieve some cascaded stock from previous SNCF operations. For example, the Corail coaches -ordered in large amounts in the 70s, have been sold onto various TER operations from medium distance services. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corail_(train)

Over the past 10 years or so, many of the 70s units have been replaced by new-builds from Alstom or Bombardier.

Hope this provides a little bit of an insight. On family holidays we've done a bit of rail travel in France (TGV, Corail and TER D/EMUs) so any further questions feel free to ask :)
