Caught the 1811 Paignton to BNS XC Voyager yesterday. At Bristol at 2000 our 4 car train joined up with a 5 car voyager. Why was that and where would the other train have come from?

According to RTT there was a XC Voyager due to start from Bristol TM at 20:00 and head to Birmingham NS so possible they're scheduled to couple together at Bristol TM

Would 2 voyagers coupled together need 2 train managers on board as there is no connection between the units? Or can they operate with just one?

The one it coupled to would probably have been from a southbound service that terminates at Temple Meads; it is not uncommon to do this and it is booked.

I think there are 3 or 4 such moves daily?

It's booked to do so: In previous weeks it's operated as a pair of 5-car units. As Peter Mugridge says, there are a small number of Crosscountry services which run as a pair of units over the core section of the SW-NE axis from Bristol in order to provide additional capacity, although in this case it may be just a balancing move to get the second unit back to Central Rivers at the end of the day: It will have previously worked the 16:07 Manchester Piccadilly - Bristol Temple Meads.

It is common for Double Voyagers at night to position them for next day or to go their Depot at Central Rivers.

Where is Central Rivers? Thanks for the replies.

Barton under Needwood, Staffs. A couple of miles SW of Burton upon Trent, on the Birmingham - Derby line, so fairly central for the XC network.

You'll find it on realtimetrains as "Barton Under Needwood Rsmd"

It's not easy to miss from a passing train, but if you're struggling, just look out for the enormous Argos distribution depot with shipping containers stacked outside it. The Argos depot is next door to Central Rivers.

I believe there should be 2 but if only 1 is available then that can run as png as there is at least one member of staff in each unit. (Such as catering)

On the balancing moves, one set is locked out of use, even though the Passenger Misinformation System suggests otherwise.

If travelling Northbound from Birmingham, its on the left hand side. About seven minutes after passing Tamworth, look left for the National Memorial Arboretum, followed by the line from Lichfield running in. Within half a minute, Central Rivers will appear on the left.

Coming Southbound, its about three minutes after passing Burton upon Trent, on the right hand side.

Rail access is available from both ends of the site- look out for both Cross Country and Virgin units, including the latter's two car 221144.

1S49 is almost always a double Voyager. You also get a double working that splits at New Street.

XC require 2 train managers as per union agreements for manning.

Yes and no. Where a double set is booked then two train managers will be rostered, but ultimately in terms of operating a double set on the day, so long as you have a member of catering staff in the other unit then both units can be run by one TM. Happens fairly frequently.

Well it is between Bristol TM and Newcastle, anyway. It picks up the front unit at Bristol and it drops the front unit off at Newcastle- that's why it's booked over the High Level Bridge. The front unit returns to Birmingham in service about an hour later.

It's pretty much guaranteed a double Voyager as it is the 1705 off Leeds, so it needs the capacity.
