Does anyone know if this is a usual career path for a train driver ? How many controllers are ex train drivers ?

We have got 1 driver working as a Controller, (health reasons), but including myself we have 15 former guards ranging from Customer Information Controllers to Duty Control Managers.

Can't really comment on Network Rail, TOC's etc. but on LU very many Drivers T/op's) took promotion to the grade of Line Controller, the grade was fairly evenly balanced with ex Signalman and ex T/ops, interestingly though in LU Service Control Centres often ex Drivers made the transition better than Ex Signalmen, and carried out the signalling function very well

Not that many nowadays in the TOC's, mostly former Conductors, because the pay with Controllers for TOC's is less than what a driver can often earn!
For the same reason drivers invariably don't want to become Driver Managers either.
