Wondering if anyone can find a cheaper ticket/combination of tickets for the above journey. Best I can find for one adult without railcard is:

Durham - Brentwood 5th May
dep. 09.55 arr. 14.17
£47.90 STD Advance

Brentwood - Durham 6th May
dep. 16.12 arr. 21.25
£47.90 STD Advance

Times can +/- a couple of hours on the above. Think there is engineering work somewhere near Brentwood on the Sunday.

I can find fairly big savings on the return journey but it does involve leaving a bit earlier and a noticeably longer journey time, so this option may not be appropriate (I suppose it depends how much of a time sacrifice you are willing to make to save money)
Brentwood 12:12 - Peterborough 15:31 £8 Advance (Specify via Ipswich)
Peterborough 16:50 - Doncaster 17:51 £9.30 Advance (on East Coast)
Doncaster 18:25 - Durham 19:43 £8 Advance (on East Coast)
So £25.30 altogether for the return leg.

If there are no reasonable advances left on East Coast, but there are on TPE, then you could get TPE advance fares to Liverpool, then the London Midland sale from Liverpool to London (£13.25 in the sale). Less time-consuming, but probably slightly more costly, would be TPE advance to Manchester, then Virgin to Stoke, and LM from there.

Alternatively, Megabus is £12 - £15 each way Newcastle <> London, or Megabus Plus is between £5 and £10 (depending on departure time) York <> London (this involves a change to/from a train at East Midlands Parkway). A ticket from Durham to Newcastle or York would be required on top, plus London to Brentwood.

Cheers for the replies. This is for a friend, so I've passed on the suggestions and they'll be choosing.
