Arriving at Dusseldorf mid week in March at around 1845 and travelling onto Koeln.

Can anybody advise on the rail connections available, tickets/fares and where best to obtain tickets.

Thanks.

best option would be a VRS single in "Preisstufe 5", which you should be able to get at the TVMs on the "SkyTrain" platforms. (Or indeed on the S11 platform under the terminal building), 11,90€ (or 10,71€ when bought as a mobile ticket).

From the terminal, you should take the SkyTrain (a rather intresting people mover) to the main line station, where there are 3 regional trains per hour to Köln (a few IC(E) services also call there, but they would be more expensive). Alternativley, you could take the through S11 service from the terminal, but that would be all shacks and not really worth the extra time.

Take the Skytrain for the experience. As Spoorslag says, it's within the "Preisstufe 5" realm. If it's windy, that will only add to the fun :D

Yep did this recently after catching the 15:45 to dusseldorf from Manchester in January. Was probably 6ish when we got to sky train. Tickets very easy and sky train very interesting!

If lucky the train to Köln will be a loco hauled double decker regional.

It MAY even work out cheaper in the whole, if you could be so wise to tell us any further requiremtns for local travel in Köln or regional around, as I assume you may need that whilst staying there. Unless its straight out long-dist. next day to faraway. Also if youre going single or with partner.

Yes thanks for replying, staying in Koeln for 3 nights returning on Saturday 7 March again from Dusseldorf Airport. May require short distance tram/bus journeys on arrival and on the other days but not planning to go far. I would also like to spend a few hours in Dusseldorf on the way back as our flight isn't until late afternoon, is break of journey possible. Yes travelling with partner.

There are no ticket barriers, and ticket checks are random and rare, so you can get on and off wherever you like.

So your plan is:
1. straight from DUS to Cologne
2. staying within Cologne a few days
3. straight from Cologne to Duesseldorf, hanging around a bit
4. Duesseldorf to DUS?

Then for 1) and 3), the best option is likely two VRS singles at price level 5 (TVM €11.90, app €10.71, as mentioned above). If you use the app make sure you choose the correct "origin". From a TVM I believe they need to be stamped in validators.

These tickets are valid for 6 hours so you can use local transport for the rest of the day on arrival, but technically only in one direction, as in you can only travel away from Koeln Hbf, not towards it (unless you can justify it as part of a single trip from Duesseldorf).

For 2) use VRS 24h group tickets (TVM €13.40, app €12.73), valid for up to 5 people, less than double the price of a solo. Singles if you don't make enough journeys within a 24h period to cover the cost of the travelcard.

As with 1) the single tickets for 3) will let you continue on local transport in Duesseldorf away from the Hbf. As they are valid for 6 hours, you could walk back to the Hbf then go to DUS airport on the same ticket. You are not supposed to use them for a side trip involving backtracking though.

If you did want to travel further away, the VRS 24h group ticket at price level 5 (TVM €37.20, app €35.34) is not much more than the two singles from DUS and Cologne and covers a very large area.
