East Croydon to Porsmouth / Fareham

I'll be going to Portsmouth & Southsea on Sat 5 Sept, but may need to also travel to Fareham later in the day. If I do go to Fareham I'll return direct to East Croydon.

Any suggestions as to the best ticket to get?

I understand a modest saving might be made splitting at Gatwick Airport, but I'm unclear over whether break of journey would be valid at PMS on an East Croydon - Fareham ticket.
