Around 2 years ago, we had a fairly simple set-up down here in the Bermuda East Kent triangle.
Six buses wended their way north from Canterbury to Whitstable on route 4. Four of those (4 and 4X) stopped at the University on the way. After Whitstable, they served Swalecliffe and Herne Bay. Two of those (both 4A) stopped at Greenhill between those two.
After Herne Bay, they'd run either through Beltinge and Broomfield (two buses an hour, this time on route 4) or straight through Queen's Roundabout (four buses, so 4A and 4X), before all six worked their way back to Sturry and Canterbury.
Six buses per hour ran the other way round too - going Canterbury-Herne Bay-Whitstable-Canterbury - on routes 6, 6A and 6B.
Routes 4 and 6 stopped serving the Uni relatively recently, running along Whitstable Road between Canterbury and Blean. The Uni was instead served by an extension of the 36. The 36 ran from Margate to Westgate, Birchington, Hillborough, Beltinge, Herne Bay and Grand Drive, where it terminated. The 36 was extended down to Tankerton, Whitstable, Estuary View Health Centre (a new stop) and Canterbury, and took over the University stop. While the Whitstable-Margate bus only ran every hour, the Canterbury-Uni-Estuary View-Whitstable leg had double the frequency (two buses per hour).
This has all just changed:
A new TRIANGLE-branded service with free Wi-Fi, USB plug points, tinted windows, and air-chill technology (whatever the heck that is) runs every 15 minutes in each direction on the most direct route it can - running from Canterbury to Canterbury via Blean, Whitstable, Swalecliffe, Herne Bay, Queen's Roundabout and Sturry. This has no route number, but is simple known as The TRIANGLE. This is supplemented by the 4 and 6, which have become separate routes.
The 4 runs twice an hour (as does the 6), retaining the 12bph frequency between Canterbury and the coast (and the 6bph frequency to Whitstable and Herne Bay respectively).
The 4 runs:
Canterbury-Kingsmead-St Dunstans-University-Blean-Estuary View-Whitstable-Whitstable Station-Tankerton (Priest & Sow Corner)
...which is the route that the 36 (now cut back to Grand Drive) used to take.
The 6 runs:
Canterbury-Sturry-Broomfield-Beltinge-Herne Bay-Greenhill-Coulter Drive-Swalecliffe-Tankerton (Priest & Sow Corner)
ON SUNDAYS:
-The TRIANGLE buses don't run on the fast route
-4 & 6 become the TRIANGLE again
-They're run by TRIANGLE buses
In any case the two routes connect at Tankerton (they're operated by the same vehicle); on Sundays they become the TRIANGLE fully and are operated by the TRIANGLE-branded buses.
