Here's a simple question, you have two Adults and 1 Child travelling Peterborough to Blackburn via Leeds using a Family and Friends railcard on advance tickets (The advance trains being booked are East Coast) - can they break their journey on the return portion at Accrington?

I know a break of journey is not allowed on the leg involving East Coast trains but is it allowed on the leg involving Northern trains?

No. Break of journey is not permitted on an Advance ticket.

So would it be better to just book advance tickets to Leeds then get anytime tickets to Blackburn which will allow a break of journey on the return?

Or Advance to Accrington and then a further ticket from there.

Are you wanting to break your journey to resume it later, or break it to finish it? If the latter, remember you can book Advance outbound and return separately (two different journeys in the same basket) and hence from differing origin/destination stations.

Want to visit Blackburn but on the way back get some shopping done in Accrington hence the need to break the journey.

Oh right, in that case yorkie's suggestion of an Advance to Accrington then a walk-up single from there to Blackburn is likely to be cheapest.
