What's the cheapest way to do the above (EDB - DEE - GLQ - EDB) in one day. An Edinburgh friend is travelling to Dens Park to take in a match (Dundee FC) before heading to Glasgow for a concert then returning back to EDB the same night.

Prefer to remain flexible - will have Sainsbury's £19 voucher offer.

I suggest GLQ - DEE return with voucher & SDS GLQ - EDB :- about £30 in total.

Can the forum do better?

Could you provide more info on the Sainsbury's £19 offer?

A £19 flat fare offer anywhere in Scotland. Based roughly on an off peak return for restrictions. Minimum spend required at J.S. Sainsbury to obtain voucher. A bit like club55 for younger people?

Did a trip to Edinburgh a few years back on a freebie ticket. When in Edinburgh I purchased a day return to Dundee. Returning from dundee I went via Glasgow Q St. I seem to recall it is a valid route.

Not true. Edinburgh to Dundee is only valid by map FK, which only permits direct travel via Fife.

Glasgow to Dundee, however, is valid via Edinburgh (on map FD; also valid via the normal route through Stirling on map GA).

Edinburgh - Dundee valid via Perth and Ladybank (as Perth is valid via Stirling & Ladybank then it follows that via Stirling is also valid to Dundee) but not Glasgow

Glasgow - Dundee as you state is valid via Stirling & Perth and Edinburgh & Fife.

If you actually looked at the RG you'll see that Edinburgh to Dundee is not valid via Perth (unless it's a direct service). As I said, the only map that's allowable is map FK. This only permits travel via Leuchars.

Also the part in brackets in your first sentence is not how the RG works. Just because a route is valid over a subset of a journey, doesn't necessarily guarantee it'll be valid over the whole journey (there are dozens of counterexamples of this). Permitted routes are not always inherently recursive like that.

Unfortunately, it doesn't follow. The Routeing Guide is not recursive. Routeing would be much simpler if that were so.

The 1952 British Railways Book of Routes was recursive. Easements took the form "Tickets valid in either direction between Edinburgh and Glasgow are available between Edinburgh Princes St and Glasgow Central via Shotts, or Edinburgh Waverley and Glasgow Queen St High Level via Falkirk High or Edinburgh Waverley and Glasgow Queen St Low Level via Bathgate". As a result, the Book of Routes was printed on only 60 small pages.

In contrast, today's National Routeing Guide has some 1500 pages and continues to grow. The latest increase in the number of pages was last Tuesday.
