What is the cheaaapest possible way of doing this?

Was asked by a friend, and I thought I'd post it here as I don't know all those magic money saving tricks.

Advance fares aren't a problem, nor is taking a slightly longer way around.
YP Railcard fares please.

Cheers

When is he travelling? Is he returning the same day? Does he want flexibility or is he happy to stick to dates and times? Is there any particular route he wishes to take (or avoid)?

Advance fares really will be the cheapest but restrictions on these tickets may not be suited to his needs.

She.

And no, not the same day. Fixed times are fine, as is any route.

Her best bet is to look for fares going via York and on NXEC up to Edinburgh as NXEC has the cheapest Advance fares

rte NXEC & CONNECTNS 430 +
XEC
BUS GC S 52.50
BTS GC S 42.50
BSS GC S 33.00
BRS GC S 24.00
BPS GC S 17.00

But if the £17.00 NXEC tickets are gone you may want to look at Cross Country

rte XC &CONNECTIONS 439 +
CC

MAS XV S 38.50
MBS XV S 29.50
MCS XV S 23.50

These are all non railcard holder fares so there is an extra 34% off

e.g. on the £17.00 NXEC & Connections single for a return with a Railcard would be:

£11.20 x 2= £22.40

Thats the cheapest you will get but of course it all depends on availability

Oooh, nice.

How far in advance would these have to be booked? And would it be a matter of sitting in front of a computer waiting for the fares to be released or do they tend to last a little longer than that before selling out?

Don't really have much expierience buying Advance fares (don't like being tied down) but the best bet is book as early as you can and if you are booking quite far ahead and can't see any Advance fares at all then you are probably looking beyond the booking horizon so will have to keep checking (although some TOCs publish theirs) until they are released.

An NXEC search for 2nd Oct (a month from now) gave:

EDB 0600 - LEI 1057 £19.40 (with online disc and YPR) (Change at Grantham and Nott)
LEI 1052 - EDB 1616 £19.45 (with YP discount) (Change at Birmingham New St)
So even at 4 weeks notice, it can be done for under £40.

For 3rd Nov:
Same outward journey and price (£19.40)
LEI 1236 - EDB 1804 £9.95 (online discount + YPR) Change at Nott and Grantham.
LEI 1052 - EDB 1616 £15.50 (YPR) Chaneg at Birmingham New St.

For 2nd Dec - no advance prices yet in teh system - £56 singles were cheapest!
