We need to beat in mind the luke warm response by the DfT to the Transport Select Committee when this study was set up.

    "Transport Select Committee inquiry
Last year, as part of the Rail Infrastructure Investment inquiry, the Transport Select Committee recommended that “Electrification should be delivered through a long-term rolling programme, in which the Department, Network Rail and the wider industry learn the lessons of earlier schemes and strive to reduce the costs. The Department and Network Rail should engage with the Railway Industry Association’s Electrification Cost Challenge initiative, and together produce a report on cost effective electrification within 12 months”.

The Government responded: “Government partially accepts this recommendation. In making decisions about whether an enhancement should progress through the pipeline we will consider whether it provides the best outcomes for passengers using the seven Principles for Investment set out in the RNEP. This means that Government will remain agnostic on how the outcome can best be achieved. The RNEP makes clear that all rail enhancements must be led by the needs that they are fulfilling rather than the methods by which they propose to fulfil them.

“We do not, therefore, expect proposals for new enhancements to begin with a pre-defined solution or input, such as electrification, but rather to set out the case for making an intervention to support a desired outcome. The RNEP sets out a rolling programme of investment in rail enhancements, including relevant and value for money electrification schemes. This approach only commits to take a project forward to the next stage when we have an appropriate understanding of how much it will cost, how long it will take, and the benefits it will deliver. This will avoid the problems of the past, where funding was committed before schemes were fully developed.

“We will continue to engage with the industry and RIA on initiatives that could reduce the cost of enhancing the railway and improve the outcomes for its users. We will work with RIA to produce a report as recommended and will revert to the Committee on the most appropriate timetable to deliver a meaningful report.”

I do hope that Transport Select Committee hauls the DfT/ Secretary of State back to check if they have marked read and inwardly digested this excellent piece of work.

Out of interest, why do you show LU only electrification but not Tyne and Wear only electrification on Network Rail metals? (ie. between near Newcastle and Sunderland)

That was a case of missing it by accident.

A good clear map - unlike so many rail maps
And the Old Dalby test track is electrified for overhead train testing, isolated from the rest of the network

I don't have the track data and I don't believe the tracks are within NESA, so I can't draw those.

Thanks and thanks for the info. I've added the data and will upload new maps once I've pushed the data onto the server. After checking, there's also a section with both DC and OLE.

If anyone would like a zoomed in version of a specific location, just let me know.

I really appreciate your work. Do you think you could upload a zoomed in version of the London area, please?

Very well drawn, a useful map.
For future development and to show the total picture - how about adding closed electric lines - eg Southport-Crossens, Bury-Holcombe Brook, Manchester-Bury/Altrincham, Tyneside, Watford and few in South London. Surprisingly few when you consider overall line closures

    Are they metro lines?

Would love to. The tracks that I have is what I got from Network Rail. I can always go get some data from OpenStreetMap but it's not always reliable.

I'm also trying to create a really high-detailed image which would allow you to zoom down to track detail without using the live map. It would end up being a very large image though!

Not a criticism, just a thought from my completist brain!
The lines were main line BR routes closed by Beeching or for convertion to Metro in the case of Newcastle and Manchester or earlier in the case of Holcomb Brook

Here are some very high resolution versions which allow zooming in further.

I work all across western Europe and in the last 25 years I've only come across one non-OLE wired track. It was on the south side of a town called Koppern on a track running south to nearby Bad Homberg.
