From today there are replacement bus services between Ely and King's Lynn for a week.

There have been posters (and electronic messages on the displays inside the Electrostars).

So so far so good, while there is the unfortunate case of the online timetables not being updated until much later than would be normal, so tickets for non-existent trains have been sold.

Unfortunately there has also been a bit of an demonstration of how not to publicise these things.

The posters (and stories on the website etc) say they are about rail replacement bus services between Ely and King's Lynn (and the electronic ones have a graphic about evening and weekend engineering works when infact these are also during the day during the week). If you read them they also do say that the direct service from Ely to King's Cross has been changed. So far so good...

So I turned up at Cambridge North this morning expecting to catch one of the Cambridge North to London KX trains to make a connection at Cambridge. Not only was it not showing on the departures display, but the staff had no idea those services were somehow affected either and suggested waiting to see if it turned up because there might have been a mistake on the departures board.

Some loud slow handclaps for Great Northern; firstly for the awful communication, and of course secondly for cancelling Cambridge North - Cambridge journeys at the drop of a hat like they always do, on this occasion where an excuse is particularly lacking :(

As I wouldn't have got to Ipswich until another 2h45 from the time this happened, and as much as I hate driving, even in these circumstances the best way ahead was to cycle back home and drive. I'm fast coming to the conclusion that, where Cambridge North is involved, driving is a better starting position :(

The information has been rather vaguely described since this blockade was (belatedly) first mentioned, and planners have only been correct for the last few weeks.

Of course in the past there would have been some sort of timetable produced for passengers to consult, at least displayed at stations, but GN don’t seem to think anyone needs to look at a timetable anymore.

Ironically the service from the north to Cambridge North is significantly better than usual this week - 2 GN services every hour from Ely, rather than the usual 3 hour gap in the morning peak...

Expect GN see Ely - Kings Lynn line as bit of a nuisance in their empire, with its single line etc (except when a certain pax makes her annual trip to Sandringham)

The stretch between Littleport and Downham Market has bad ground conditions causing the track to sink hence why they tooktone track out, (one track is cheaper to maintain than two) the shifted the existing line in the middle of the two to give more support, the masts alternate either side

There are lots of local tales about the concrete mast foundations disappearing in to the fens withing 24 hours of them being laid...
Where's George Stephenson when you need him ...

Apparently his Chat Moss solution was actually designed by someone called Robert Stannard, who was an "East Anglian marshland specialist".

Most of these issues have disappeared with 150 years of trackside drainage.

On bbc look East either Sunday or Monday night it said the line was closed until Thursday which I understand to be wrong, more misinformation

You're correct, it is wrong, not really sure you can blame what a local news programme says on GTR though - they're quite well known (like a lot of the press!) for being fairly inaccurate when it comes to anything rail..!

I gather someone tried to be too clever at Ely and the trains didn't fit originally.
