I've just been through my e-mails. and the following was in my in box. thanks J Mccrickard at GCrailgen.

21/6 - National Rail Live Departures, Real Time Trains www.

1608 - reported; 1803 - updated:
Emergency engineering works at Eaglescliffe means trains cannot run between
Middlesbrough and Darlington / Northallerton. Buses will run between these
stations, extending journey times by up to 30 minutes. This is expected to
continue until approximately 2000.
Buses replace trains between Middlesbrough and Darlington / Northallerton
until approximately 2000.

GC 1A68 1529 Sunderland - London King's Cross (180105 on diagram)

CANCELLED because of safety checks being made - had departed Eaglescliffe
1645 (33L)

so is either the cause or caught up in whatever is going on!

Clues anyone?

It's clear now, but anything I had seen on Twitter was described as a 'Track Defect'

Recently I was on a morning service that was held outside Eaglescliffe due to broken rail just beyond the station on the line to Northallerton. After around 20 minutes, the Grand Central which had been sat in the station ahead of us had been reversed and passed us, going via Ferryhill then reversing again before heading south. When we got moving a few minutes after that and arrived at Darlington, the Grand Central was already there and sat in P1.
