Energy from Waste - Rail Connected Terminals and Services

How many bin-liner services are operated regularly in United Kingdom? Are there plans for new rail services to EFW plants, for example the new one being completed at Stewartby on the route of the EWR? If this has been discussed before I would appreciate redirection.

There are three trains each way per day (one each from Bredbury, Northenden and Brindle Heath refuse transfer stations in Greater Manchester) to Runcorn Folly Lane for the energy from waste plant which powers the Ineos Chlor Runcorn factory. These are hauled by Freightliner (mainly class 70s). Also there are two trains each way per day operated by DB Cargo from Knowsley (Merseyside) to Wilton in the North East to power an energy from waste plant there. A new 90-Megawatt energy from waste plant is under construction at Lostock (Northwich). It is currently unclear if rail will be used to bring in any of the feedstock. A rail connection has to be provided as a condition of the planning consent.

A couple of years ago, when I worked in London, there was regularly one sat on the avoiding line at West Hampstead Thameslink. It often stank.

I would expect there to be a lot fewer bin trains taking waste to EFW facilities compared to landfill sites.

EFW facilities can be located closer to the source of waste than landfill sites can. As well as electricity EFW sites can produce heat which is fairly limited in how far it can be transferred.

The more local the source of the waste the less beneficial the use of rail transport.

I cant really think of any trains carrying household waste direct to landfill these days, but there are trains leaving from the former Rossington Colliery and also a train a day leaves Collyhurst Sidings north of Manchester Vic, both trains carry inert building rubble to the landfill site at Roxby near Scunthorpe this site formerly receiving waste directly from Greater Manchester.

In the other direction is the flow of ash from the EFW plant at Newhaven.

The Viridor EFW plant at their Dunbar landfill site was intended to receive waste from Edinburgh by rail (as the landfill site did). Although the plans don't show a direct rail connection so it seems that any waste would have to be transported from the rail terminal a short distance by road.

From the planning application

The existing Viridor Landfill site at Oxwellmains operates a custom-built rail terminal, delivering 150,000 tonnes of waste per annum under the waste-by-rail disposal contract with City of Edinburgh Council. This significantly reduces road traffic movements and associated atmospheric emissions, although it should be noted that from 2010 this figure could potentially reduce to 110,000 tonnes per annum under the terms of the existing contract.

Since then Edinburgh's waste is now taken to a new EFW plant in Millerhill (next to the rail depot) which receives waste by road. The Edinburgh, rail linked, waste transfer station at Powderhall closed after being condemned.

Viridor is planning to build a plastics recycling plant next to their EFW which would benefit more from rail connectivity as it will receive material from a wider area due to its more specialist nature.

Multifuel 1&2 at Ferrybridge is rail connected, with 2 new sidings and 2 gantry cranes.
Never been used though, as far as I know.

Not seen one on the Brentford branch recently, but the Northolt to Avonmouth service is daily

Landfill as a way of ‘disposing’ of waste is declining across the country as recycling and energy from waste is encouraged instead. How long before some landfills are emptied to recover and recycle the resources within? Saw it happening in China back in 2004.

It's a shame the BIG incinerator just south of Gloucester (A mile or two north of Standish Junction) wasn't rail connected
