Hi everyone,

I would like to work in an engineering job on the railway as it's the kind of job that appeals to me - outdoors, hands on, shift work.

However I only have a PTS card, no other railway engineering/pway experience. Apart from apprenticeships with Network Rail and Tubelines which I've looked into, can anyone advise me what would be a good way for me to get into this line of work? Would I be best going back to college and getting an engineering/electronics/mechanics type qualification then going for a job or starting out in an entry level position and working my way up?

Also, could someone tell me what the typical sort of pay and shift pattern is for someone working on a posessions team for Network Rail? I've searched everywhere but had no luck finding the answers.

Thank you
Chris

NR's apprentice program seems the only way in at the moment. You could try agency work but be prepared to be used and abused.
