I didn't see a thread for this so I thought of making a new one - basically a discussion on any engineering work covering track not used by regular passenger service.

Do you mean engineering works on track which doesn't see a regular passenger service?

Or engineering works on a regularly served route, meaning diversions over rare tracks?

I suspect you mean the latter, in which case there are numerous examples even just this summer.

For example, GWR services being diverted through St Philips Marsh depot due to engineering works at Bristol Temple Meads. Southeastern services diverting via the Beckenham Junction-New Beckenham curve, and Avanti services diverting via various lines in the Birmingham area to avoid the Trent and Stour Valley lines, also via Middlewich on other occasions.

There are lot of closures on the SEML between Hither Green and Petts Wood Junction this year meaning the New Beckenham - Beckenham Junction curve is seeing quite a lot of traffic at weekends when the SEML is blocked through Grove Park.

Good example might be when the line is closed between Basingstoke & Southampton via Winchester and XC divert via Laverstock using the normally freight only curve between Laverstock North & South junctions on the outskirts of Salisbury

You might like to check out https://groups.io/g/gensheet/messages which is the first port of call for raising awareness of rare routes being used for engineering work.

GENSHEET UK rare rail routes [email protected]
The Gensheet email group is for the discussion of UK railways passenger train diversions and unusual routings.
Future information is especially welcome, but recent and historical 'rare track gen' may be posted and discussed.

There are two postings a week advising of items of interest made by the moderation team.

The main field of interest is use by normal service trains, however limited discussion of specials and railtours is permitted, but please keep to the 'rare track' aspects. Railtour advertising is limited to ONE announcement per tour.

Other posts that may be of use to the 'rare track' community may be made, but again keep our main topic in mind. As an example postings noting useful ticketing are sometimes made. However think carefully before replying to any messages on such fringe topics.
