There are a couple of things. On my (non-stagecoach) bus, when the card is touched it either goes red and displays an error, goes green and displays 'elderly' or 'disabled' or in the case of a 'disabled plus companion' pass it prompts for yes/no to companion, then goes green.

There is also a card enquiry button which will display the products loaded onto the card, with expiry date etc.

Edit: the above is the Ticketer system, which in my view is very good

Depends on the set up of the ticket machine and company.

We get (non Stagecoach):

ENCTS_Conc
EXP: xx/xx/xx

ENCTS_Conc 80
EXP: xx/xx/xx

ENCTS_DI Ent
EXP: xx/xx/xx

INVALID
Not Valid for Travel

Do the English cards also cover Council tax, Library services, Council sport centres, which are common with Scottish cards?

Yes which is so inefficient and a waste of money
But these are locally controlled services not available throughout England. The Bus Pass covers the whole of the country. Is it really cheap to put so many dissimilar services onto one card?

A publicly stated aim of ENCTS (which is issued locally by councils don't forget) was to integrate services like this onto the same card.

Not universally, but some authorities do this for certain services, for example the Derbyshire county ENCTS pass doubles as a library card for Derbyshire libraries.

Why would that be an aim when the card is only for people "of an age" and a lot of those don't take the opportunity up?.
As someone who has a National ID Card (still owed £27 refund), I would have thought this was the way to go with it encompassing Driving Licence and anything else thought necessary.

Company programmed ERG machines.

Double checked today (after months of just saying 'ok' as it beeped and not really paying attention) and they've been updated to display

Expiry: XX/XX/XX

SC_DI_ENCTS
Expiry: XX/XX/XX

SC_Conc_ENCTS
Expiry: XX/XX/XX

INVALID
Do not allow travel

CARD ERROR
Unknown Issuer

HOTLISTED
Do not allow travel. Retain card.
