If you had the chance to drive either an Enviro or a Desiro, which would you choose ?

Having had the chance to drive the infamous 450196, I'd rather take the 450! (Mind you, i'd rather take anything over anything by Alexander Dennis - including a rough riding 70!)

Driven plenty of Enviro 200/400s down in London on weekends. In terms of ergonomics, they're superior to a few other types I've driven. Only problem is the tampering of the engine to prevent the driver from having full control of the acceleration and braking.

I've not really been keen on the idea of being a train driver, though I'd never say never.

Enviro.

Though, if it's like the other ADL buses we've got*, it'll be crap and I'll be quite happy to get back behind the wheel of a Volvo afterwards.

Rumour is, our hybrid Enviros have been so unreliable and crap that they're going back to Dennis in the next couple of years. It's also why the single deck hybrids we're about to get are Volvos.

*Ok, that's not quite fair - the 52 and 53 plate Pointers are mostly alright, and I think the older Tridents aren't too bad.

Enviro.

Driving a 185 although very comfortable, is actually quite drab.

*allegedly

Definitely an Enviro. The reasons can be applied to (almost) any bus though; more freedom and more feel of control.

What puts you off?

It's just not my cup of tea. I love driving the buses, not just because there is a great sense of satisfaction but there is plenty of interface with the customers. Plus I have worked on board trains before racking up up to 900 miles a day and disliked being stranded in the most random of places when things went wrong. Once got stuck behind some frozen points for hours then ended up spending the night in a hotel over a hundred miles from home. I'm someone who likes being static or working within a small catchment area.

BAE have been having issues with the development of the hybrid drive (for development, read fixing them before installation). As a result, Stagecoach's 59 E400Hs on order have been pushed back quite a bit.

If they're anything like our E400Hs, this will become a common sight:

McPhie's must be making a fortune just from recovering the 15 Enviros everytime they break down.

Our Hybrid test vehicle (a DAF I believe) was almost never on the road - it was that unreliable. I have to hope that our new E400Hs are more reliable than yours :|

I would have thought the preference would be to put the E400s on rear suspended tow as it removes the need to disconnect the half shafts before towing....

I've driven lots of 61/12 plate E400Hs and rarely had a problem. One had clamping brakes so I failed it after 200m of driving - another had an electrical fault of some kind but generally they were quite reliable.
