Eurostar and Thalys in Partnership Agreement

TWO high-speed international train operators — Eurostar, Britain, and Thalys, Europe — are to offer through ticketing and improved transfers at rail hubs following the signing of a new partnership deal.

They will offer joint ticketing and shared loyalty cards as they prepare for a major expansion of Europe’s dedicated high-speed rail network, says The Financial Times.

The move comes in advance of new routes such as the High Speed Line South in the Netherlands, and aims to make connections between Eurostar and Thalys services easier.

Eurostar – which operates mainly between London and Paris and Brussels – and Thalys – which operates mainly between Paris and Brussels, Amsterdam and Cologne – will call the airline-style co-operation deal RailTeam.

RailTeam is pan-European initiative, which aims for high-speed operators to share best practice. Provision of information to passengers is set to be improved, and business information such as frequent travellers and ‘technical developments’ will be shared between the two companies.

Maybe they should form an Alliance with each other e.g. Aviation Alliances - Oneword, Star Alliance or Skyteam.

But aren't the doors wider than regular doors, and aren't the coaches shorter (articulated)?

If they had more doors, that would inevitably mean less seats. If station stops are not frequent perhaps the seats are better?

Thalys/Eurostar/TGV are all the same design...and only have one door per car because of the articulated design, which means that the coaches are shorter. Less doors=more seats, and when you want 750 people on a 20 car train, that's quite important.

Also remember that door equipment takes up a lot more room on these trains...because there is also the foldy-out step thing!!

However, the ride quality (and the in car silence) tends to make up for it!
