With the end of the Greater Anglia class 90s operating intercity passenger services on the GEML I am now starting to wonder when they will be in service with Freightliner and when they will come back to the Great Eastern on such traffic? Would definitely make an interesting sight seeing them in the new orange `jaffa cake` livery and back on GE metals!

they all need modifications for freight service, so my best guess is the first one won't be in service until July at the earliest, hopefully a few 86s might still be in service at the start of 2021.

How many 86s are still in service - there seem to be regular diagrams, but always the same few?

Currently all of the remaining Freightliner 86s are used (except 86610 & 86627, which were stored earlier this year (does anyone know if these will work again??)).
So 86604, 86605, 86607, 86608, 86609, 86612, 86613, 86614, 86622, 86628, 86632, 86637, 86638, 86639 are currently used with various rotations for maintenance.

So, to clarify (it's been a while since I got over to the Greater Anglia operating ground), have the 90s officially finished now?

Thankyou very much for the information and I hope so,I'll miss seeing the class 86s on freights. I hope they wont get scrapped.

I have no idea of the comparative costs - but it seems crazy that there are so many diesel powered services on the WCML to Felixstowe - if Ipswich is a convenient location to change electric to diesel at one end, surely there is somewhere that would work further north for any terminals that aren’t wired?
