Was just reading on WNXX about a possible reduction of the 37 fleet due to costly exams approaching and I'm curious does anybody know what costings generally are for the various exams on rolling stock?

the costs in themselves don't matter it's whether the owner /operator thinks it's worth it

the youngest 37 is over 50 years old nominally

As long as current operators don't make the same mistake EWS did: which was to stop locos when exams were getting close to due based on engine hours, meaning the reliable locos were laid up and the active fleets were made up of the "demics"!

(I'll admit this is a gross oversimplification!)

Also some of the Class 37s are owned by preservation groups, where the cost of the exam is going to be vastly altered by virtue of much of the work being done by volunteers.

100k + for E exam at a guesstimate

407/424 had around 1.2m spent each

How much stripping down needs to be done to a loco for doing E exams? Presumably at minimum the engine gets lifted out an inspected separately

It depends on the type of traction and the maintenance regime.

For an HST power car, an E exam is a bogie change and various other items. The power unit is on a different regime entirely which will be based on manufacturers (MTU or MAN/Paxman) maintenance instructions.
