I hold an Off Peak Day Return ticket from Preston to Blackpool North for today, which cost £4.80 with a railcard. I went to the ticket office at BPN and asked to excess the return to Wigan, for which I was charged £3.60. Was this correct, I was under the impression that it was half of the difference in fare-ie. £1.80?

FWIW, the ticket seller was very friendly and helpful-has someone from Northern read the other thread talking about rude staff at Blackpool?? :)

This is the old chestnut- what's the destination on a ticket when you're on the return leg ? They've messed it up, it should be half- provided they're willing to do it. (I always do). The star machine (which MIA use so I assume BPN will be the same) will work it out if you say "return only" but they've left it on "whole journey".

But others will say no, it has to be a new single only. Which brings split tickets into the equation...........

That's correct; for overdistance it's the full difference regardless of whether it's in one direction or both.

For change of route and upgrade in class it's half, otherwise it's the full difference.

Yes Jake you are correct, I'm jibbering. It was the half case for over distance up to a few years ago.

STAR, as use by Northern ticket offices, correctly calculates this type of excess fare, provided the correct information is put in, so regardless of the clerk printing "return only" or "whole journey" the fare would be the same, the only difference would be how many tickets printed out.
