Teesside Airport is going to be hosting an air show on Saturday 29 August. What do we think are the chances of Northern Rail having some of the four trains per hour (two in each direction between Darlington and Middlesbrough) calling at the station?

This will certainly wind up the statisticians. It'll be one hell of a surge in passenger numbers.

How convenient is the station for the actual event?
Is there much of a walk or will a shuttle bus need to be laid on?

Having the Vulcan there in its last year of flying will probably double the turn-out, I don't think it is making any other trips up north this year.

Walking from the station is not too far, there were some gates onto the tarmac about 100 metres down the road from the station form what I recall, although it depends where people are going to be allowed to stand.

Problem is the road is too narrow to be safely used by buses if people are also walking down there. Even if they cut the grass, people with buggies etc. will want to use the tarmac.

The other is the complete lack of accessible access to the down platform, staircase only.

The terminal is quite a walk but from the sound of the website they will be using an access point slightly closer. It's the terminal that is a long way away form the station, the airport is right next to it but when you want a flight that isn't much use (neither is the timetable but that's another story ;))!

The only thing down that road is the station so they'll probably just close it to vehicles and make it pedestrian only.

I was responding to the query about shuttle buses.

They would either have to try and get everyone on a shuttle bus, or get everyone to walk really.

I just hope the scheduled trains remember to stop at the station, given that the last chap I know who went to Teesside Airport station ended up going straight through as the train didn't stop! (Yes it was the weekly booked stopper)

Press cutting says no trains will call at Teesside Airport for the airshow as the bridge is not safe enough to cope with expected passenger numbers.

There will be a park & ride set up from Darlington Arena and Durham Lane Industrial Estate.

The railway "can't do" attitude strikes again. All over the country, stations cope with special events using a few barriers and some extra staff, if necessary with counters to limit the numbers let into an area. There's no way the Teesside show will have the number of passengers that Sunderland or Southport Airshows get, but telling everyone to use their car is just crazy.

I think I've heard all the excuses now.

Surely it's not beyond their wit to limit the number of people who can enter the station at any one time?

Do you think this is a ploy to keep the passenger numbers down , there could be the equivalent of a number of years passengers on just one day! Potentially would increases in passengers make it difficult to close the station if they so wished?

Would have caused the ORR computer to overload working out the percentage increase being in many numbers.

To be honest if the station had been open for this event I would expect the number to at least equal the entirety of the stations usage since the last airshow in the early 1990s!!!

8 pax a year on average. So probably more than that in one go.

The bridge is pretty 'rustic' so I can believe it. No disabled options at all on any northnound trains so they are probably dreading a fleet of pushchair wielders ignoring signs and hopping off there only to find no way out!

Would have been nice to see, but it's been postponed until next May in light of Shoreham. Might have time to strengthen the footbridge by then! Can't see footbridge strengthening or the show itself happening myself.

The website still says it's going ahead? It even mentions holding a minutes silence for the victims of Shoreham so it's clearly been updated since then!

Yes I see an article on BBC News also says that. You'd have thought if they're going to re-arrange the organisers would have updated their website pronto!

The SLUG (Saltburn Line Users Group) Facebook page says it's been postponed until May.
