The National Rail areas of various stations on the Northern City Line are pretty grotty, not sure which of Moorgate, Old Street or Essex Road is worse, with their gloomy and slightly sinister underground staircases and passageways

Broad Green. Unprepossessing 1970s brick shed; frighteningly narrow platforms; grim subway; squeezed in between the M62 and an industrial site.

Anywhere but here...
Bordesley station. Just a hut on a dilapidated platform on a viaduct. Reasonable view of Birmingham but in an unpleasant area. The regular passengers are best not thinking about as well.

Not the whole station, but the box in which the Stratford International NS1 station is located is particularly ugly, with its rough concrete walls. It looks like they couldn't be bothered or ran out of money to finish it

The disused platforms at Hartlepool and Halifax. Bradford Interchange is also terrible compared to what it replaced.

All three trumped by Sunderland. Never seen the view from the outside but inside is awful.

Went through Hellifield yesterday and for a station that should be a gem it isn't inspiring. The West Coast shed and vans, scaffolding for uncompleted works, dilapidated rarely used track and the "change here for Clitheroe" potential unrealised. Leeds is a bit of a hole too.

Hellfield is massively improved on what it was in the 1990s because of the opening of the cafe, quite similar to Carnforth in that regard.

Some of the GSM masts the railway have erected are really bad.
Top prize for an ugly installation is the one at Ais Gill.

Hellifield is sad. renovated at vast expense but now most of it is gated off, and unused. While the Northern trains use the bits with no canopy so the passengers get wet.
Can no-one find a use for for the station buildings. And open a little more of the platforms that are covered.
and do something with the derelict bay. (Put track in it for a service from Clitheroe please)

Langwith Whaley-Thorns. In a dark cutting, no redeeming features, not particularly busy and the crowning feature is a burnt out 1990s Ford Fiesta just off the end of the platform if you know where to look.

Just been looking at photos trying to spot the Fiesta with no luck... Give us a clue!

Small Heath & Duddeston - They both have an abandoned island platform and a building at the top. The state of the steps onto the platforms and the platform is of such disrepair it makes them look very grim/derelict.

What regular passengers?? Personally, I find Bordesley more creepy than an eyesore, (mainly the steps up to the platform).

Could add the line between Lime Street & Broad Green for extra measure, very grim mostly through cuttings & tunnels, Edge Hill station is even grimmer than Broad Green, not much to look at, horrible station even in summer.

I think the approach to Lime Street through the tunnels and (especially) the cuttings is wonderful - both visually and a reminder of the work it took to create our early railway network - but a dull world if we all thought alike!

Ore station looks horrendous these days, with those horrible pointy fences. Quite a contrast with the rest of the Marshlink which is pretty lovely.

Luton station must be a strong contender for eyesore, needs the station to be completely knocked down and rebuilt.

Mind you, the bus interchange there is the only bit that actually looks alright!

Palisade fencing.
Ok I know it’s there to do a job but it just makes me cringe looking at it.
Some areas of the country it’s painted green to blend in.

Newport Gwent mixes poor quality new facilities and run down old ones. Not to mention the station is currently a building site due to the electrification works.

Port Talbot Parkway before it was refurbished was probably the worst station I’ve ever had the misfortune of spending time at. It was literally the worst, I can think of a word to describe it but not it’s appropriate for posting here!

It's a corker, isn't it. A pocket Birmingham New Street, but without the latter's airy charm.

Must admit I don’t get the hatred for Sunderland. Sure it doesn’t have any loveliness to it, but as a station it’s conveniently sited in the centre of town, has easy access to the platform, and the platform is at least roomy and dry. So from a user’s point of view it ticks the boxes IMO.

Well, this this thread is about the aesthetics, rather than the practicalities of stations.

I gather Sunderland had quite a good train shed before Gerry bombed it in WWII
