Just booking some Advance tickets for my usual route (Hereford to Southport via Man Picc) for mid-July, and find that the lowest tier fare (with railcard) has increased from £13.20 to £13.85.

Is there usually a general increase at this time of year (to catch the summer trade perhaps), or is it just some operators who put their prices up?

Hereford to Crewe has gone up too. Not sure about other journeys.

Fares increase in January, May, and September.

I already have my tickets for May and June, so this booking is the first time I've found an increase. It must be because I booked the May and June ones some weeks ago, perhaps before the May increase was implemented.

Fair enough, thanks for clarifying.

Yes, for travel on or after the change date (15th May), if you book at least four weeks in advance (i.e. 16th April or earlier) you will still be charged the old prices.

Why are there so many increases in one year?

Happy to be corrected but Jan is the main annual increase. May is for seasonal increases for some TOCs and to reflect seasonal services. September I am less certain about but there tend only to be minor tweaks. However I'm viewing this from a London perspective and there may be other regional factors which trigger increases elsewhere (like PTE fare increases).

For advance tickets, prices can only be changed for Jan, May and Sept as mentioned by other posters.

However TOC's can change the tiers and restrictions of the advance levels, to make it more expensive, mostly depending on demand.

The three fare rounds used to be 1- set fares for the year 2 - summer saver increases 3 - summer increases reversed out
