Why are there so few trains a day on the thameslink/"widened" lines to moorgate, and how did the westbound platform at Barbican, a station near the middle of UK's capital manage to simply get shut off?

Why has nothing been done? I'm sure London Underground wouldn't mind having 4 tracks in that section for regulation if Thameslink don't want it much...

Oh well, perhaps it could be used for crossrail.

It's nearly physically impossible now to give it to LUL due to the sidings east of Farringdon LUL which are very much required in service disruption.

The platform at Barbican is simply riddled with potholes, etc, which means it is out of bounds to both staff and passengers (only maintenance may go on the pfm for when maintaining the OHLE). To be picky, Moorgate is about 1.5 miles away from the centre of the capital, as that's nearer Tottenham Court Road Nick. ;)

Depends whether you term the Centre as the point furthest away from the edge at every point, Charing Cross or the City of London :p

At the moment Kings Cross Thameslink to Blackfriars has 16 TPH off peak (4 to Bedford, 4 to Brighton, 2 to St Albans, 2 to Luton, 2 to Sutton and 2 to Wimbledon). During the morning rush hour trains from the Wimbledon loop are reduced to about 2 an hour and in the evening Brighton trains are reduced to allow trains to use Moorgate. Outside the rush hour there is no real need to run trains out of Moorgate what with a good through service and a regular tube service from Moorgate to Farringdon.

As Tom has said Platform 4 at Barbican has been condemed for many years and seeing as the station is only served during the rush hour it has been deemed uneconomical to redo the platform.

If Thameslink 2000 is to go ahead Farringdon Junction will be closed to make a 12 coach platform and it cannot happen sooner!

Moorgate was only open because the Brighton Mainline was closed and trains were terminating at Haywards Heath so half the service went into Moorgate. I worked a couple of these trains last week and they didn't have a soul on them between Farringdon and Moorgate, makes checking the train a doddle though.

Once St Pancras is re-electrified, these Moorgate diversions will end up there.

The Crossrail route will be virtually beneath the ZFD - ZMG route, it's a shame it can't surface between Farringdon and Barbican, use the Barbican platforms [which will need attention no matter what] before descending again to re emerge east of Liverpool Street.

There is some debate apparently over what to do with the ex-T'link route once the BedPans stop using it, one idea is the LUL Farringdon sidings are abolished and they run a track extending from the site of the sidings to join up to the old TL route, giving them an extra 2 platforms at Moorgate.

Hope this is of use?

A great shame: I would have thoruhg the extra cost in the trains going up and down would me minimal compared to building extra tubes in.
