I've always been impressed with Voyager acceleration. From a standing start they are pretty impressive.

If I remember correctly, the 350 Desiros are the fastest accelerating UK EMUs. The 395s are also exceptionally quick off the mark.

As for DEMUs, the 220s have the best power to weight ratio of the Voyager and Meridian family.

220s are faster off the mark than a 221 by some margin and are by far the quickest thing I have ever driven. Dry rail is a must though as anything slightly damp hampers a quick getaway

I too am a fan of the 395's, more so the modified ones that don't shake like a crapping dog in the single bore tunnels.

(One thing that puzzled me on last nights regular Hitachi jaunt is why on earth do they have seat reservation systems?)

How are you defining "Fastest Accelerating"?

A unit might be quick off the mark 0-30, but then be a slow burner to 75 (90,100,110 or 125).

That may have been the case however I wager that the Class 380s are more then capable of wiping the floor with the Class 395s/Class 350s if put to the test.

395's are fairly consistent in their acceleration, I find.

I must admit I've been very impressed with 220's get-away from a standing start over the years.

Sitting at the rear of a 220, it has been quite amazing to see how quickly they build up pace whilst still within the platforms at Brighton!

333s are quick off the mark, although the last one I was on the driver was giving it full throttle to try and make up time

220s are very quick at accelerating it always impresses me. ALthough for sprinters i think the 150s are very quick. You leave platform 1 at leeds very quickly.

350/2s are the quickest to 100mph, they beat a 395 marginally. Obviously a 395 goes faster though.

When we last discussed this, I think we established a 185 beats a 220 to 60mph, but a Voyager beats it thereafter.

Similarly a 220 beats a 180 to 100mph, but a 180 gets to 125mph quicker.

Clearly it's a eurostar... Nothing beats it from 150 to 180....

;)

Pedants relax, it is supposed to be a joke.

No-one's produced any stats to prove their case - are these available anywhere?

Either a 395 with its 2/3rds axled motors or a 500 Series Shinkansen if we are allowed foreign trains, as that is entirely motored and has far more power than a UK train could ever dream of.

395 should win easily, it has loads of power and more motors than any other train I can thihnk of.

The 350 figures definitely are, I'm on mobile at the moment but will try and dig them up when I get home.

The 180 nugget came from an internal fGW publication.

I think Hitachi refused to release the 395 stats to the media on the grounds that they are unfairly compared and the UK way of measuring performance and reliability unfairly disadvantages their products, but someone did some digging and got them anyway.

For dmu's I find the class 175's accelerate very quickly especially when pulling away from Pyle before beginning the climb up stormy bank. I have noticed when the 175's work the swanline services they can get to stations early an example being Swansea - Llansamlet timed to take 7 minutes a 175 can do it in 5 minutes.

For emu's I would have to vote for the class 395's I find they accelerate much more quickly than the desiro's
