Are they laying the foundations for a siding here? Noticed there is stone, sleepers and rail stacked there, don’t know if they are building sidings or just keeping it there for future engineering work.

Would there be a strategic advantage to having sidings here to utilise the open space? Could be useful for engineering work, although Pelaw sidings aren't far away.

Metro or NR side? If its on the Metro side then that's where materials and such are stored for engineering works, what's there is probably linked to the recent work done in the Heworth area.

If Google Satellite/Street view is up to date then there’s a proper access gate on Sunderland Rd, and alongside the bottom of the ramp is a pad for getting road/rail vehicles onto the westbound track. So it’s probably also the likeliest place to stockpile materials for use on the south side of the Tyne.

There is an access gate there yeah.

Agree it is probably to do with future engineering work. Thanks guys.
