Does anybody know what services the FGW 153s are diagrammed to work on weekdays ?

I am hoping to track down the last one I need to clear the class (153368) when I am in the South West next week.

They are diagrammed to work a huge amount of services. Three are in use on the Falmouth branch, one on the Newquay branch and one on the Looe branch. One is spare at Plymouth all day until it works the 1557 Plymouth-Penzance. Two or three operate on Exmouth-Barnstaple/Paignton service all day. One works the 1607 Exeter-Plymouth and 1746 return. One should be on the 1102 Westbury-Southampton, 1227 Southampton-Great Malvern and the 1650 Great Malvern-Southampton should have two 153s on from Gloucester to Westbury. A couple more operate around Bristol but I'm not 100% sure on what services.

Thanks for that. Looks like Devon and Cornwall account for the majority of diagrams, but as you say they operate over a very wide area.

Another booked service is 0800 Cardiff-Paignton and 1248 return paired with a 158. Then does 1700 Cardiff-Taunton but not sure what after that.

Good luck with your hunt, I still need 8 153s to get the lot but I'm working on it! :D

I think that like with most FGW DMU diagrams, more or less anything (anything with bogies, at any rate ) can appear anywhere really. At least, on routes from Bristol. The 1310 from Weymouth (above) was more often than not a 153+150 in Summer, but is usually a 150 this time of year.

Yes, there's plenty of 153s on Weymouth trains in the Summer, but less at this time of year. The diagram which works Southampton-Great Malvern and return does seem to be a 150 more nowadays.

This is usually a 150 and a 158 as opposed to a 153. I see it every morning coming into Cardiff on the 0619 from Bristol.

Used to be a 158+153. Now that the final two-car 158s are being disbanded it may go to a single three-car 158.

I've seen the Swindon to Cheltenham services as a 153 on a Weekday once, but also a 158/9 has been on it too so that can be anything it seems.

Also the 06:00 Portsmouth to Cardiff (1F06) has a 153 attached at Westbury (08:10) on a Saturday and drops off at Bristol TM (arr 08:47) which does something else after, don't know if it does the same on weekdays mind

Same on weekdays, works the 0905 Bristol-Westbury, a return trip to Warminster and then the 1102 Westbury-Southampton. Nowadays it is often a 150 though.

Heard recently that FGW have had a successful bid for four extra units in addition to the cascaded examples from LO & LM but I don't know what the units are or where they are coming from.

    Anyone able to elaborate?

Plan is to "double up" the 153's on the Falmouth Branch diagram from the December timetable change to ease overcrowding.

Ultimately when enough units are available the Falmouth branch diagrams will consist of 2 x 150 units and the 153's will be used elsewhere. Consideration is also being given to swapping the St Ives and Falmouth diagrams around in the short term to allow 2 Class 150 workings on the Falmouth and a 153 on the St Ives.

What happened to the FGW Class 153's they got rid of a year or two back and went into storage at Eastleigh?

153325, 153333, 150202 and 150216 are the extra units, all now with FGW.

153325 and 153333 are London Midland ones, Will they be going back to LM or staying with FGW for good?

Falmouth is already 3 153s, 2 on one diagram and one on the other. Thought the plan was for 2 Class 150s from December. 2 150s were used in the high summer this year. A 153 is fine on St Ives at the moment usually, but if you get a nice Saturday, or a nice day in the Christmas holidays the trains will be packed again.

I never knew Falmouth was that popular.

Well a couple of days this week it has been a 150 on one diagram and a single 153 on the other. I believe that is also the case today.

150s are much more suitable to the line. The door layout on the 153s causes delays, which can quickly build up with the tight turnarounds on the line.

Why did FGW get rid of 4 153s only to take on 142s, 150s and more 153s.
None of it makes any sense.

Lots of students at Penryn due to the University there.

Drivers state that the 153's are heavier with the toilet installed and struggle to pull away from gradients.

Also heard an unconfirmed story a few months ago that the engines had been downrated to save on fuel and wear and tear!

I don't think they had much choice about swapping the 153s for 142s; I think that was decided from On High. The 150s & the later 153s came later on, as they became available from LM.

So LM 153325 and 153333 are staying with FGW for good, they have only just refubished,

Yes they're stopping with FGW for good it seems. The alleged recent 'refurb' by LM appears to have consisted of a coat of fresh paint and little else, they're pretty grotty inside. Presumably there will be no FGW refurb done on them at this late stage in the franchise, although the swanky new P.I.S system they have is redundant (and means the cab-to-cab doesn't work with other units) so perhaps we'll see this being removed, maybe they'll even return it to LM! :D

The PIS system is pretty useless, not sure the passengers really need to be constantly reminded that there on a Class 153. The refurb isn't that great in general, the door areas are still painted in that horrible orange.

The PIS on 153325 and 153333 is to be removed by FGW and manual destination blinds refitted as before, they have a class 170 Public address system with is non standard on the 153s and use a different handset - which has been moved to a different place in the cab. I expect the PIS and internal PIS will be sent back to LM.

The external and internal PIS is worked by entering your headcode, service code and day of the week and then it will show service calling pattern internally and final destination externally.

Also you can manually enter a code for the final destination to be displayed externally if your train is being diverted from its normal route or is calling at more or less station than normal for a certain service.

    01 Not in Service
    02 Divert Emergency
    03 Divert Planned

Since all these units are going to need some form of PIS installed by 2020 - doesn't it make sense for all of them to take on the Turbostar PIS format?
