Coming down on the 17.05 Paddington/Penzance yesterday I was surprised to see a newly refurbished buffet car in an otherwise unrefurbished set.
Simply down to the fact that Ilford are rather more speedy with their refurbishments than Derby are.

Ah cheers. Had funny feeling it was a 66, didn't think it was a 47 that went past as didn't have that 47 'rumble' lol. Was hoping to see it return before I finished work, but it had only just got into sidings next to Embankment Road when I went past on the bus home, shunters swarming round checking them.

How is it that the latest SWT 159100s refurbs have retained sensible seats then?

Don't worry, they'll probably have to be changed at expense to SWT, causing even higher price rises. :(

Nah, I would presume they fit into the guidelines, whatever they specify. (I think but am not sure that SWTs 1588xx refurbs have the same seating as the new 159s so they are fine too :))

Actually, talking of SWT "158/8s", any reason why they can't be classified as 159/2s?

159s are naturally 3 car modified for the SR environment.

The 158s SWT have are 2 cars modified for the SR environment.

Why should we have 2 cars in with the 159s?!

Well, why are there 377/3s and 375/3s? And 168s are all over the place with formations, but are all the same class.

TBH Its the SR mods and FC seating that makes it a 159, not the cars.

You could have:

159/0 - Original Conversions
159/1 - Ex-TPE Conversions
159/2 - Ex-TPE 2-car Conversions

How comes 'one' got away with keeping the low backed seating. Or was that becuase they called it a "refresh" rather than a "refurbishment."

More than likely a 'refresh'

Saw 47853 pass Tavistock Junc. this morn at approx. 8.42am with another set for refurb, on early shifts most of this week thank god, further details from therailwaycentre.com below:

47853 formed 5Z91 08.45 Laira - Bombardier Derby formed of 44049. 42145. 42144. 42143. 42268. 41136. 41003 coupled between two barrier vans. Of special note are No. 44049 and 41003, these are the last two remaining pre-refurbishment dynamic lines liveried HST cars, used for the Franchise launch in April 2006.

377/3s have a different traction package to all other 377s they dont normally work in conjuction with other 377s as they dont currently have power sharing software or programming for the SDO when used with a 377/1 or 4.

These are the 3 car 377s usually to make a 9car Brighton Express train?

Seen at approx 1.53pm this afternoon, going past Laira Depot into Plymouth, a power car on a low loader with escort, awaiting entry into the depot. Any ideas what it was, & where it's come from? No number or name on it, & in FGW 'barbie' livery.
