No.

It's a special train for family + friends who work for FGW to take them to Railfest.

It sat at York for around 45 minutes after arriving, looked very smart. First two production power cars as well so drew a lot of attention.

Got a set of 8 photos on flickr, a good selection I think!

I should add, I didn't even know it was working and was only at the station because I had 2 hours to kill whilst my car was getting MOT'd, talk about good timing!

How many other TOCS would put on such a special to get their staff to an event such as railfest. assuming it is very popular with staff to warrant a HST?

Indeed, didn't FGW run a 158 to Sheffield relatively recently in a similar situation?

It was the ACORP community rail awards which FGW and its partners always do very well at, so staff and volunteers from the various rail partnerships more than staff on that I'd imagine.

The Rail Fest HST was well loaded, should of been formed by 43002/43198, the first and last production power cars. Indeed a special beer was being sold on board named, 'First and Last' with HST photo on the bottle label. So bit of a shame they couldnt manage 198....

I suppose they had an option - either do first and last power cars (so 002/198 as you said) or 002 + 003 as the first two that formed the first set when the HSTs were introduced as class 253/4, 43002 +43003 forming 253001, that's why these two power cars were chosen I presume, as they formed the first HST set. (Remember that the initial plan was for sets to be formed with the same power cars, hence the 253 number as opposed to the class 43 + mark 3 rakes we see today.)

I'm guessing getting the actual carriages together from the original 253001 set would have been tricky beyond any reasonable effort

And a Load 7 would have been a 253 set, IIRC. Good idea though, quite popular for photos by the look of it but still, doesn't beat the 253001 set on the last days of Valenta's on FGW. The ECS out of Padd was loud, and they put 253001 stickers on the nose ends too, surprised they didn't do the same for this one!

Yes they would, not even two of the coaches are normally together:

41003 FGW (Set LA12)
41004 FGW (Set OC36)
40501 NR 977984 (NMT coach)
40001 FGW 40904 (Set LA64)
42003 FGW (Set OC38)
42004 FGW (Set LA04)
42005 FGW (Set LA72)

It was set LA04 though, so provided 42004 was actually in the formation at the weekend one of the original coaches was used.

getting the coach from the NMT would have been ratther a challenge! I take it the other renumbered coach has had its type changed?

Both are buffets being in the 40xxx range, I'm not sure what type of buffet it was in the prototype vehicle. 40904 has the full buffet counter but the short kitchen area and a staff office instead of the full kitchen so it's not suitable for serving a full restaurant in.

40501 was a TRUK (Kitchen car for doing full meals, with no buffet counter). It was used latterly on the Tees-Tyne & Yorkshire Pullman services.

40001 was a TRSB, a more basic buffet without a Kitchen. It became 40401 to prevent a clash with a Class 40, and was converted to 40904 with a Kitchen when it joined the FGW fleet. From memory, I think this is one of the coaches owned by First Group, who bought 5 sets from Porterbrook a few years ago.

Yeh it is. The First Group owned sets are the five with 409xx buffets.

I would imagine you'd struggle to even find them after three decades of relentless mods and renumbering!

Fair play to FGW for organising this, it's very pleasing indeed to see a large TOC, with all the usual stock limitations and financial constraints, making this kind of substantial effort for these 'non-curricular activities' as it were. Nice bit of PR for the firm of course, but also genuinely above and beyond what is required and expected, and indeed well beyond what could be arranged at many other TOCs. Nice one.

Really????

I thought it was 43004 and 43198.

The power cars mentioned aren't FGW powercars are they?

Which, 43004 & 43198 or 43002 & 43003? Either way, they all are FGW power Cars - with 43002 & 43003 Having been the last Valenta fitted power cars on FGW - For which FGW temporarily renumber the set as 253001 before both were taken out of service for refurbishment / MTU Fitment up at Brush.

43002 and 43003 worked the Railfest special as 43198 was playing up the week before.

I heard that from the managers aboard the train as I was aboard.
