I think most TOC's run this kind of system to allow for trains that run past midnight. Otherwise they'd need to operate two services, one finishing at 23:59 and a second starting up at 00:00.

Yeah that's it.

Weird how the train knows it's coach 9 but hasn't sussed the length...

I wonder why new trains still don't get divisions right.
