the one at Newlyn on the A1 jumps out. There’s a couple of steep hills on the A5 too
Newlyn/Chywoone/Paul Hill (everyone has favourite name for it) is that not only is it steep, but it has the added issue of a lot of traffic and parked cars so buses can rarely get up it without stopping a few times.

As a kid I can remember travelling up it in a Bristol LH many a time with the driver routinely changing down to the crawler gear on the move - using both hands. Quite a skill!!!

The only time I've ever had a bus come to a complete stop on a hill due to running out of puff was on one of the A-VAF Olympians. This was on a 40B service into Truro with a very full standing load heading up Edward St in Truro (the hill with the courts at the top). It was a passengers off job and then all back on board for the run back down Castle Street. I don't think buses have to do this loop anymore?
Not timetabled to anymore, although it's still part of the diversionary route when the city center is closed for late night shopping, road works etc.

Thankfully Kernow's current fleet seem to manage pretty well up there

There are at least 2 hills in Bristol where you had a compulsory stop at the top before going no higher than 2nd going down. Then there were routes that were nearly all up hill in one direction and down in the other, up to Kingswood springs to mind.
Plenty of steeper lanes in Cornwall than Newlyn but only single track with no buses !

Abbotsbury hill in Dorset has taken its toll over the years, especially due to it`s length.
Many years ago I was on a VR with a healthy load that succumbed to the gradient. Luckily only 50 yards from the summit, so about 20 able bodied people got off and walked behind the vehicle to the lay-by at the top.

Just like to add it is curvy, if not twisty, with different widths most of the way up, and cars/vans/lorries (but not buses, of course:lol:) hurtle down it, whether they have the right of way or not, and then they get to the Newlyn crossroads, which always seems to fox the unwary. Got to say I think Sennen is steeper though.

Yes, Sennen is definitely steeper I'd say.

Then of course we have the hairpin bend on the A1 between Treen and St Buryan. On the inside it's almost vertical!

Off topic a bit but, Portesham hill is even steeper, if not as long, but has some nasty bends, must be interesting when that is used as the diversion route to the A35.
I still remember meeting one of the X53 deckers on that hill that had broken down, and having to overtake it on what is a constant blind bend, not fun. Esp. when you consider I was driving as a learner with no proper lessons!

As for Abbotsbury Hill, if only it didn't have the tight bend at the bottom, no chance to get any speed up. Plus a little way up the hill it gets even steeper so if you change up a gear just before this point you end up running out of puff a few moments later and having to change down again!

Only bus I've been on up Portisham hill was a Merc 709, which handled it quite well.
Another hill worth talking about of course is Porlock, 1 in 4 I believe. First used to operate the 300 Taunton-Ilfracombe via Minehead which was a Dart.

I have never been on the 300 but have driven Porlock Hill many times. I go for a weekend at Lee Abbey (nr. Lynton) with the group from my local church every other year but prefer to take the B3224 from Bishops Lydeard, via. Wheddon Cross, and stop for a pint at Exford on the way over. Takes a while but very scenic.

A nice touch on Facebook with individual posts thanking staff. We were asked for work selfies earlier this week but not told why

32955 withdrawn July 2019
33052 withdrawn 2018
33031 and 33125 at Bridgwater
33127 at Taunton

That`s the allocations before the Covid crisis started, but who knows what has happened since.

Saw quite a few buses on Saturday, mostly FK but also BfC, in Penzance and Truro and between the two places. All but two (a TI and an 89) were single deckers and the total number of passengers I saw at a glance were 5! The buses were on the A17 (two buses), T1 (two buses, but one seen twice), T2, M6, 47, 16, 89, U4, PR1 (3 buses plus one off service), a Truro 'town service' by a minibus in dark livery: I also saw a bus turn into the Malpas Estate, but when I attempted to follow it less than a minute later it had disappeared out of sight! The passengers were on the M6 (1), 16 (2, from Sainsbury's) and 47 (2).

By the way, this was by no means a jolly. I was taking my wife to a hastily organised scan at RCH, knew I had at least two hours before I could pick her up, and was under strict instructions that I could neither park there nor even leave the car for an instant.Difficult to know where to go, but I chose Waitrose because at least it had a WC, an absolute requirement, although a cup of coffee was out of the question, unfortunately. Incredible weather with almost empty A30 - only saw one police car, which had done a 'stop' to check reason for travel, but never had an easier car journey. Strange days! Reminds me of an old Avengers TV series episode from the 1960s which featured a small town with no visible inhabitants.
