Floods

As im a resident of Tewkesbury, which was badly affected in 2007, not as bad at the moment, with the river only 300yards away, but luckily i live up a slant. Id love to share if possible stories of anyone you know or maybe yourself?

Also if you disagree with the need for more housing, but many developers in some cases building on flood plains. The Wheatpieces estate in my town is a prime example. Does anyone know of any others places that this has been done?.

I remember in 2007 catching a class 150 through a flooded Tame Bridge Parkway.

I sat through two sheffield floods in 2007, then took a weekend to go to cornwall and got stuck on the m5 at teweksbury same summer. Last car to get off the m5 before they fully shut it. Got out via cheltenam.

I certainly wouldn't advocate building on the floodplain in the vicinity of Tewkesbury! Is the place perpetually flooded? I was there in late 2009, and found it in a very similar state to that seen in the photos you have posted:

Those photos look pretty bad but they're just flood plains so they're as to be expected. It always looks bad as you drive along the M5 over the Avon flood plains at Bredon but thats what they're there for. Tewkesbury get it first then we get it down river.

And yet Bradford has just given authority for another large estate of ticky-tacky houses to be built on floodplain in the Wharfe Valley. The environmental objections were dismissed as being from "middle class nimbys", by the councillor responsible.

All over the place. Build quickly, sell before buyers/insurers cotton onto the fact that places prone to flooding are still prone to flooding after building on them.

Worse still, in some places such estates lead to flooding of areas which used to be relatively safe. In Oxford for example, new housing estates have led to bad flooding in Osney and New Hinksey - due to increased run-off, lack of natural flood plain and the EA's decision to flood these areas in preference to the new estates.

There are plans to build a residential estate to the south of Peterborough - near to the ECML. You know the place?
Its where the river is confined by dykes on either side through Stilton Fen and Yaxley Fen dropping to below sea level where the mainline crosses Holme Fen?

I was told that there won't be any problems though, because the houses will be built on a concrete raft to prevent sinking.

I hope these plans don't go ahead - there's places to build housing and that ain't one of them.

If the ECML ain't going to be 4 tracked in that location because of the location, I can't see why housing should get the go ahead instead.
