Have just watched a Despatches programme about these machines found in Betting Shops.

Apparently they can become really addictive, I have never tried one but have witnessed lesser scale machine addiction in Bingo Halls.

Are the individuals responsible for their own losses - no one forces them to play ?

No doubt Government inaction is spurred by the Licence Fees they rake in and VAT as well probably

Go into a Casino in Vegas and at least 50% (usually more) of the floor space is dedicated to these machines. Often with many occupied by glassy-eyed zombies feeding cash into them. AIUI most of the casino's profits come from them.

They are notorious for their addictive qualities, indeed at uni my then girlfriend was a recovering addict who had to be kept away from them.

I was thinking of opening a thread on gambling only yesterday! Coincidence! :P

I've never really tried the slots, but I had a friend who won a few hundred playing them in Vegas.

I threw £20 down the toilet betting on the horses at Newcastle Racecourse yesterday. Didn't put the money on myself mind, but my Dad's friend won £75 on a relatively small stake, I think it was £20. He spent the whole afternoon gambling on the same horse number (8) and every time the eighth horse was failing to get a top three finish. He must have wasted about £50, but then, on the penultimate round of betting, Number 8 came in first!

Gambling is a thing in my family. We've got Premier Passes at the local racecourse and have a canny history of succeeding at the roulette!

Spot on. Though Ive seen people play em for hours whilst ive been in a shop(taking the dog for a walk ) and cant get over it. I know most play roulette on them..

I dont mind the roulette but I have a tenner and thats it.

The big reason the machines are so popular is that they are more or less guaranteed in the long run to eat whatever percentage of the punters' money they are programmed to do. A popular or well-backed horse winning can ruin a bookie's day.

Probably about 50-60 quid. A lot of people playing them seem to think they have a system with covering certain numbers which return 35-1 so there is method to their madness. I just have me set numbers and corners and thats it really. One of them comes in and its around the 20 mark for a £4-5 spin. thats not bad returns
