Has anyone here driven a steam engine or drive one?

I had a foot plate experience at the Severn Valley Railway. It was absolutely brilliant.

I drive 7 1/4 inch locos at the Great Cockcrow Railway. Tis good fun, i prefer them to fullsize engines

I have driven GWR tank 1338 at the Didcot Railway Centre during a "drive for a fiver" event. I hope to have a go at driving something at bit bigger of the GWR variety in the autumn.

On a train...somewhere!
Never done Kettles.

Done diesels, which I highly recommend.<D

Diesel cab rides are great! I'm under 18 so I can't drive but have had some good rides on 03s, 08s, 31s & 47s. <D . You get a totally different view from 'up front' and the ride is surprisingly smooth and quiet.

I have also ridden a steam loco (80105) from Leyburn - Redmire and return. That was also an experience but the ride quality and noise is great but not comparable to diesel traction. I had also been dealt one of the hot days of 2008 so I wsa quite warm on Return to Leyburn!!

Being on the footplate of a steam engine is unbeatable. It's a truly amazing experience. More hands on than a diesel, and you get much more out of it, I suppose, as it takes a real skill, almost an art to drive them. :)
