Hi, since about lunchtime yesterday (9 March) I have been unable to access Fotopic, either to edit my site or look at others. (E.g. the first link in my signature below.) Are other having the same problem?

I do hope these drop outs get sorted. I would rather not have to move all my 6000+ photos elsewhere. :(

In fairness every time they have a snafu the story goes out that they have gone bust. I'd give it a day or two before I'd start to worry. It may just be a power cut in their area.

I do hope the rumour is wrong. There is absolutely no way I can start from scratch again with my seven sites. Just too many hours work down the drain.

Fotopic does seem to be getting less and less reliable these days. I wouldn't actually mind paying more for a better level of service.

Is that recent? They were sold to Snappy Designs a couple of years ago, but I can see no current news about them.

I'm going to hold my hands up here, I've looked again and the thread I saw was a couple of years old... sorry! Schoolboy error

It's probably a technical problem, but you would think they'd divert hits to another server which said, "Sorry, the site is down".

Slow loading and a non-informative page suggests that the web servers are down.

Time to head for Flickr...

Seriously though Fotopic should have a status page hosted on another ISP with a tertiary DNS to redirect to a status page if required

Even if fotopic does come back (which I think is unlikely) I will use other more reliable ways.
Fotopic is not sustainable with the amount of failures so it is likely to be doomed, and I don't like having to move all of my 20 photos to pikfu.

Someone has kindly explained to me how to get a Cached copy of a Fotopic gallery or collection, from which the owner can retrieve Captions, etc.

Enter the exact collection or gallery name URL in Google's home page (may not work from a google search at the top of a IE page). Hit Search and the top item should be the gallery (or collection) against which the word "Cached" is written. Click on "Cached" and your page will appear, which you can print off to make a copy of the captions, etc.

If you use the URL for a gallery it will show a list of collections. Go to a collection, right click and select Properties. This displays a box showing the exact URL of the collection. Copy the URL and paste it in Google home page, then as above.

It works for me. Good luck!

Well despite being an eternal optimist even i'm starting to admit the odds are against us and the situation is grim.

If Fotopic has been consigned to the "recycle bin" it is nothing short of a disgrace that no notice was given and the plug was simply pulled with out warning.

They own the site, they have the right to pull the plug whenever they want.

It came with a lot of warning though - anyone who didn't move their photos after the first lot of downtime, and the person who sold the company coming back to fix the problems, can't really complain. Fotopic has been a doomed ship for a while now.

Well of course they can pull it when they like but to be honest it's pretty crap to land so many people in the brown stuff like this.

What I don't like is the fact that many have subscribed to them and will have lost the money and fotopic will have run off with the money (effectively stolen?)

Even if they do come back I doubt many will have any confidence in them.

Slowly uploading my stuff at:

Here's a thought. It's a little optimistic, but see what you make of it anyway.

We already have User Galleries on here, so what if someone with a bit of website know-how set up a full site for all on here to use, and then if necessary it came with the same Google Ads system - or even a small subscription fee relative to volume required - to cover its costs? Indeed, I would even offer to do it myself if I knew how!

Would be an interesting challenge.

Yes of course they have the right to pull the site but some notice to users who have paid for the service would be nice. But as we all know Snappy Designs and Customer Service don't exactly go hand in hand.

What ever about the Jan 2009 blackout Fotopic is certainly a doomed ship now. Plus the thoughts of starting a new site are a pain in the backside to be frankly honest.

I think search not working and not being fixed for over a month was another sign something was amiss

I really think fotopic is dead in the water. Even now people are moving their photos elsewhere so if it did come back, it would have far less subscribers, and after this latest fiasco, who will trust them?! I'm looking at building my own website now - which should be fun because I'm a complete and utter novice!!! Wish me luck - I will need it!

I don't think I could ever again commit so much effort into someting so ephemeral as the internet. Yes, I was guilty of staggering naivety in thinking that the work I put into my sites over the years would last indefinitely. Lesson learned. Next time it will be hard copy only. Time to publish some books - it takes longer, but worth the effort. Flickr will suffice for the selected highlights that I choose to place online.

Saying that - there is the risk of putting too many eggs in one basket.

The only way to garentee your web gallery is to host it yourself, and to back up regularly (if you self host you can back up the captions and meta-data aswell)

Fotopic didn't seem to have mainstream appeal which may have been it's undoing
