Hi,
First post so hopefully I'm doing this correctly. I really don't know much about trains, just someone on another forum suggested I try here.

I'm considering buying a flat that is on what was the Edinburgh South Suburban line.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edinburgh_Suburban_and_Southside_Junction_Railway

It mostly for freight, though I believe passenger trains can be diverted along it too.

I'm worried about the possible noise.

Does anyone know if its possible to get a time table that would show me how often trains are passing.

The flat is roughly around here:

I can't give you chapter and verse but I spend a lot of time either in Morningside or passing through it and it is very rare to see or hear a train - once a month, if that. I would be surprised if someone in the know said there were 20 movements in a day. There are certainly some, but nothing comparable to living by one of the busy Edinburgh lines.

Craiglockhart and Niddrie West are the junctions at the ends of the South Suburban.

This site lists all the trains that might possibly run on a particular day (a day with no engineering works as it happens).

The ones listed as STP or VAR run as one-offs rather than every day, whereas as you will see scheduled freight trains are often cancelled or only run irregularly.

Most of the trains at night are empty passenger trains to and from Craigentinny depot.

People living near railway lines (and I've done that) generally find they stop noticing passing traffic quite quickly.

We live right next to the Leeds - Huddersfield - Manchester line. There are overnight passenger and occasional freight trains and 12 trains or more an hour during the day. It just doesn't bother us and hasn't after the first few nights.

I live next to line further up past slateford towards carstairs and we get the fright for the sub amongst others and despite backing directly on to the railway its not a problem at all (to me anyway).

Thanks very much for providing that search and the info on the junctions.

So would all the trains listed, if they weren't cancelled end up running along track between Craigentinny and Niddrie - i.e. past my home? Roughly 40 trains a day?

Sorry this is probably very obvious.

I slept in a house beside a loco stabling point where 3/4 GMs where left running always as it was harder to restart them. After few nights I didn't pass any remarks. Few years later the stabling point closed and girl friend couldn't sleep . She said ther was no trains and she noticed the difference.
Must be an hypnotic sound given off by trains.

You seem to be right in the middle of the Suburban line. If you go to realtimetrains Detailed Schedules, and put in either Craiglochheart Junction or Niddrie West Junction and put in the time as 00:00 - 23:59 you'll see all the booked trains to pass by you along the line, freight and empty coaching stock movements. There is one scheduled Passenger service, 1C99, XC Glasgow Central to Edinburgh. Departing 21:05 Arriving 22:21. Hope this helps you.
